Nick Carter Bares His Chest, Opens Up About Health Struggles
February 06, 2009 09:02:22Bulking up after being diagnosed with a potentially fatal heart condition eight months ago, Nick Carter has no hesitation to shed his clothes off and bare his chest for this week's issue of People. To the weekly publication he opens up about his health struggles after 10 years of battling with alcohol and drugs.
Nick was touring with his band Backstreet Boys in Europe last spring, when he suddenly experienced mild chest discomfort and fatigue. Undergoing medical tests, he was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, which is described as a weakening of the heart muscle which can require a transplant or lead to sudden death.

Fellow band members; Howie Dorough and A.J. McLean, were seen among the guests, which included former NSYNC member JC Chasez and Nick's younger brother, Aaron Carter.
"They shut off all the lights and did a surprise for Nick downstairs early in the night," a witness said. "They all yelled surprise and they had cupcakes for him." Guests were treated to a tower of Sprinkles cupcakes and to a live performance by the house band, Steel Panther.

Backstreet Boys are less than three months away from releasing their new album, and they still haven't found the perfect name for it. But progress has continually been made, approximately 11 or 12 songs are expected to make the cut and member Nick Carter said that they are up to putting final touches.
"We are just putting the finishing touches on it and it sounds incredible," Carter said. "We didn't needed to cut that many because I think that we're back into our rhythm of what the group is about. I felt like 'Never Gone', the last album we did, was basically an experimental album in the sense that we'd been away for four years. We were just trying to find out niche again and I think now we're back in that pocket."

Carter was soon dragged to the local police department to cunduct a field sobriety tests, after which he was booked for investigation of DUI and had his vehicle impounded. There aren't any details given yet because the investigation is still in process. A district attorney will determine within the next few weeks if there is enough evidence to file charges, Lieutenant Dave Bunetta said on March 7, 2005.
