AceShowbiz - The highly anticipated film Masters of the Universe brought fresh excitement to CinemaCon as stars Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes, and director Travis Knight presented new footage and insights into the upcoming release. The movie is an adaptation of the iconic Mattel toy line and is scheduled for theatrical release by Amazon MGM Studios on June 5.
In the film, Galitzine takes on the role of Adam Glenn, better known as He-Man, a former prince of Eternia who was raised on Earth. Mendes stars as Teela, while Jared Leto portrays the villainous Skeletor, and Idris Elba appears as Duncan, also known as Man-at-Arms. The ensemble cast also includes Morena Baccarin as the Sorceress, James Purefoy as King Randor, and Alison Brie portraying Evil-Lyn, among others.
During the CinemaCon presentation, Galitzine humorously showcased the iconic sword of power, describing it as "ancient, mystical, very difficult to get through security," and joking that he was instructed not to swing it, citing legal reasons. This moment underscored the film’s blend of fantasy and humor.
Mendes shared a glimpse into the film’s deeper themes, hinting that despite the abundance of muscular heroes, the story centers on a young man struggling with feelings of inadequacy. "Strip all that away, and it's about a kid that doesn't feel that he's enough," she explained, emphasizing the emotional core beyond the action.
Director Travis Knight expressed his personal connection to the source material, revealing that Masters of the Universe was a beloved franchise during his childhood. His passion for the project shines through in the film’s faithful yet fresh adaptation.
The newly revealed footage at CinemaCon opens with Galitzine's character being teased as "Highlander" before a confrontation with Beast Man. Just as the situation escalates, Mendes' character Teela arrives heroically to rescue He-Man, asking, "Adam, is it really you? You don't recognize me? Ready to go home?"
The film’s extensive cast also features Sasheer Zamata as Suzie, Charlotte Riley as Queen Marlena, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson as Malcolm/Fisto, Sam C. Wilson as Trap Jaw, Jon Xue Zhang as Ram-Man, Hafthor Bjornsson as Goat Man, and Kojo Attah as Tri-Klops. Additionally, Kristen Wiig lends her voice to the character Roboto.
The Masters of the Universe franchise began with Mattel’s action figures launched in 1982, quickly followed by the animated series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe in 1983. Over the years, the franchise expanded into video games and a wide range of merchandise, becoming a cultural touchstone for many fans.
After a protracted development period, the film's screenplay is credited to Chris Butler, Aaron Nee, Adam Nee, and David Callaham, with production led by Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Robbie Brenner, and DeVon Franklin. Their combined efforts aim to bring this beloved fantasy world to life on the big screen with fresh energy and spectacular visuals.
CinemaCon, the premier annual event for movie exhibitors and studios, hosted this exclusive preview from April 13-16, providing an exciting platform for studios like Amazon MGM Studios to showcase upcoming films to industry insiders and press. The event is known as the official convention of Cinema United, marking a significant moment for the promotion of Masters of the Universe.
As fans eagerly await the June 5 release, the new footage and insights shared at CinemaCon have heightened anticipation for this modern reimagining of the classic story. With a star-studded cast and a passionate creative team, Masters of the Universe promises to blend nostalgia with contemporary storytelling for audiences worldwide.
