AceShowbiz - Extraction is gearing up for its third installment with a fresh update that channels the high-octane style of the Mission: Impossible series. This development comes as Netflix and the Russo Brothers continue to build on the success of this action-packed franchise.
The Russo Brothers have attempted multiple franchise launches over recent years. Notably, the films they personally directed, such as The Gray Man and The Electric State, faced criticism for lacking originality despite massive budgets. Contrastingly, Extraction, released in 2020 and starring Chris Hemsworth, emerged as the most successful franchise under their umbrella, despite not being directed by them.
Extraction introduced audiences to Tyler Rake, portrayed by Chris Hemsworth, and the franchise continued with a sequel in 2023 that improved on its Rotten Tomatoes score from 67% for the original to 80%. The sequel also set the stage for a third film by introducing a key new character played by Idris Elba. According to sources like What’s On Netflix, production for Extraction 3 is slated to begin soon, with filming locations including Australia and various European sites.
One of the most exciting aspects of the upcoming film is the involvement of a critical crew member who worked on the recent Mission: Impossible films, Dead Reckoning and The Final Reckoning.
Returning as director for Extraction 3 is the franchise’s creative lead, Sam Hargrave, who has a background as a stunt performer and coordinator on various Marvel movies. Hargrave’s transition into directing has drawn comparisons to Chad Stahelski, famed for the John Wick series, due to his ability to orchestrate complex action scenes that often appear as continuous, unbroken takes. Both previous Extraction films were praised for these standout sequences.
Before taking the helm on Extraction 3, Hargrave is set to direct Apple TV’s Matchbox: The Movie, starring John Cena and Jessica Biel.
The cinematography for the third film will be handled by Fraser Taggart, who replaces the cinematographers from the first two films—Newton Thomas Sigel and Greg Baldi. Taggart’s recent work includes the last two Mission: Impossible movies directed by Christopher McQuarrie.
In addition to the film, the franchise is expanding with two spin-off projects. Netflix is developing an eight-episode series titled The Mercenary, starring Omar Sy and created by Glen Mazzara. Another spin-off film, Tygo, is planned to be set in South Korea and will star Don Lee. These expansions indicate Netflix’s commitment to growing the Extraction universe beyond the main films.
As anticipation builds, fans can expect Extraction 3 to deliver the thrilling, expertly choreographed action sequences that have become the franchise’s hallmark, now enhanced by fresh creative influences from the Mission: Impossible team. Filming is expected to start in June, and with locations spanning Australia and Europe, the next chapter promises to be a globe-trotting, adrenaline-fueled experience.
Stay tuned to Collider for continued updates on Extraction 3 and the expanding franchise.
