AceShowbiz - Comedian Matt Lucas apologized to Millie Bobby Brown after she called him out in a lengthy message addressing the pervasive negativity and "bullying" approaches by media personalities concerning her appearance.
At just 21, the "Stranger Things" star has grown up under the glaring eyes of the public and the media. She highlighted the relentless commentary that digs into her choices and looks, emphasizing how unsettling it is to see such behavior from adults, especially women.
"The fact that adult writers are spending their time dissecting my face, my body, my choices, it's disturbing. The fact that some of these articles are written by women? Even worse," Millie passionately stated in her video post.
Among the people she named in her post was Matt Lucas, a comedian known for his role in the British sketch show "Little Britain." He posted a photo of Millie in a pink top and added a catchphrase from his "Little Britain" character, Vicky Pollard.
Millie wrote, " 'Little Britain's Matt Lucas takes savage swipe at Millie Bobby Brown's new 'mommy makeover' look' - written by Bethan Edwards, amplifying an insult rather than questioning why a grown man is mocking a young woman's appearance."
The comedian explained that his intent was never to "slam" or insult Brown, expressing his shock at the media's framing of his post. "I thought you looked terrific and I was mortified when the press wrote that I 'slammed' you," he added, noting that he has always admired her talent.
"Dear Millie, I just saw your post and wanted to respond, and provide some context. Nearly 25 years ago I co-wrote and appeared in a sketch show called 'Little Britain.' There was a character in it called Vicky Pollard, who had blonde hair and always wore a pink top, and in the photo you had blonde hair and wore a pink top so I pointed out the similarity by posting one of her catchphrases," the comedian clarified in his apology.
Millie's response to the media scrutiny brings attention to a larger issue faced by many young celebrities growing up in the public eye. She expressed that society's expectations make it difficult for young women to grow naturally and without fear of being judged or shamed.
"We always talk about supporting and uplifting young women but, when it comes down to it, it seems a lot easier to tear them down for clicks," she remarked, urging a change in how society addresses and supports young girls growing up.
With support pouring in from celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker, Pixie Lott, and Lily Allen, Millie's stand against demeaning narratives has resonated widely. Her declaration to live unapologetically remains a powerful call to action.
"I refuse to apologise for growing up. I refuse to make myself smaller to fit the unrealistic expectations of people who can't handle seeing a girl become a woman. I will not be shamed for how I look, how I dress, or how I present myself," she affirmed.
As Millie Bobby Brown continues her career, starring in upcoming projects like "The Electric State," her message remains clear: young women deserve to grow, thrive, and be celebrated on their terms, not constrained by others' expectations. It's a sentiment that resonates deeply in a society quick to criticize but slow to uplift.
