AceShowbiz - After a brief period of silence, "Emilia Perez" actress Karla Sofia Gascon is ready to return to spotlight and she decided to mark her comeback at the Academy Awards. On Monday, February 24, the actress confirmed her attendance at the upcoming Oscars after a series of her inflammatory tweets resurfaced.
"I'm grateful to all those who've believed in me - to Netflix, the production company, and my colleagues. We can close this beautiful and difficult path that began three years ago," she said of her upcoming appearance at the Academy Awards.
Gascon, the first trans woman nominated in the Best Actress category, faced an intense backlash for her social media posts targeting Black people, immigrants, Muslims and even her own co-star Selena Gomez. The posts, dating between 2020 and 2021, included derogatory remarks about George Floyd and disparaging comments about diversity at the Oscars.
In one tweet, she wrote, "More and more the #Oscars are looking like a ceremony for independent and protest films, I didn't know if I was watching an Afro-Korean festival, a Black Lives Matter demonstration or the 8M."
Facing this storm, Gascon took an introspective route, deleting her social media accounts and issuing multiple public apologies including a tearful television interview.
Netflix, which had initially championed Gascon's portrayal of a cartel boss transitioning into living as a woman in "Emilia Perez", distanced itself from the actress following the scandal. Gascon's image was removed from "For Your Consideration" posters, and her travel and accommodation expenses were no longer covered by the streaming giant.
Her colleagues from the movie also publicly distanced themselves. "I do not support Gascon's posts and I am still processing my feelings," said co-star Zoe Saldana.
Director Jacques Audiard who also faced scrutiny for his controversial remarks about Spanish language being "the language of the poor," scolded Gascon for being "self-destructive."
Gascon immediately responded, "Following Jacques interview that I understand, I decided, for the film, for Jacques, for the cast, for the incredible crew who deserves it, for the beautiful adventure we all had together, to let the work talk for itself, hoping my silence will allow the film to be appreciated for what it is, a beautiful ode to love and difference."
As her silence began and she's absent from numerous awards shows, Saldana as well as Audiard started to give Gascon loving shout-outs from the stage when they picked up awards at some of these high-profiled ceremonies.
Karla Sofia Gascon may have seen this as a sign for her comeback, and Netflix has reportedly backed her by covering her expenses. Whether her journey continues to be one of redemption or controversy remains to be seen when she steps onto the red carpet this Sunday, March 2, when the film's biggest night unfolds.
