AceShowbiz - Selena Gomez has made her stance clear in the midst of a turbulent period for the Oscar-nominated film "Emilia Perez." The controversy surrounds her co-star Karla Sofia Gascon, whose past offensive social media posts have come to light, casting a shadow over the film's Academy Awards campaign.
Speaking at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Gomez addressed the situation with unwavering support for the project. When asked about how she was coping with the controversy, she replied, "I'm really good."
"Some of the magic has disappeared, but I choose to continue to be proud of what I've done, and I'm just, I'm just grateful and live with no regrets," she elaborated, before emphasizing her firm stance, "And I would do this movie over and over again if I could," drawing applause from the audience.
Gascón, who plays the title role in the Netflix film and becomes the first openly transgender performer nominated for an Oscar in an acting category, has been under intense scrutiny.
The firestorm was ignited by resurfaced old social media posts that were racially charged against various communities, including Black people, immigrants, and Islam. Gascón has publicly apologized multiple times and sought to defend herself in a teary interview with CNN en Español.
Meanwhile, Gomez's other co-star, Zoe Saldana, has distanced herself from Gascón's remarks, stating during a Q&A in London, "It makes me really sad because I don't support [it], and I don't have any tolerance for any negative rhetoric towards people of any group."
In response Gascon's multiple statements, "Emilia Pérez" director Jacques Audiard criticized the actress for being "self-destructive," leading to her decision to issue another apology.
Gascón announced on Instagram, "Following Jacques' interview that I understand, I decided, for the film, for Jacques, for the cast, for the incredible crew who deserves it, for the beautiful adventure we all had together, to let the work talk for itself, hoping my silence will allow the film to be appreciated for what it is, a beautiful ode to love and difference."
Following the actress' decision to be silent, the director gave her a surprise shout-out at the DGA awards despite his previous refusal to contact her. When receiving the DGA medallion, he thanked his "wonderful cast" and "beloved actresses, Karla, Zoë, Selena, Adriana, and Edgar, who is not an actress."
Jacques Audiard himself is under fire for his controversial remarks about Spanish language. He described it as "language of the poor" in an interview and never addressed this statement despite backlash among the Spanish community.
