The nominations for the 2025 Oscars have been announced, with crime musical 'Emilia Perez,' post-WWII drama 'The Brutalist', and Broadway adaptation 'Wicked' leading the pack.

AceShowbiz - The 97th annual Academy Awards are shaping up to be an exhilarating event, with Conan O'Brien set to host for the first time and groundbreaking nominees like Karla Sofia Gascon making history.

Following a delay due to Los Angeles wildfires, the nominees for the 2025 Oscars were announced live by Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott on January 23 from the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater. The nominations set the stage for what promises to be a landmark event come March 2.

Topping the nominations this year is "Emilia Perez" with 13 nods, just one short of the record held by films like "Titanic" and "La La Land."

The crime musical, which tells the story of a cartel leader who has transitioned, has already made waves, winning four Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. Its lead actress, Karla Sofia Gascon, made history as the first transgender woman to be nominated in any acting category.

Close behind are "The Brutalist" and "Wicked," each with 10 nominations. Other films competing for the prestigious Best Picture award include "Anora," "A Complete Unknown," "Conclave," "Dune: Part Two," "I'm Still Here," "Nickel Boys," and "The Substance."

The latter film has stirred conversations around the industry's mistreatment of older actresses, thanks to Demi Moore's compelling performance.

In the Best Actor category, nominees include Adrian Brody for "The Brutalist" and Timothee Chalamet for "A Complete Unknown." Meanwhile, Cynthia Erivo of "Wicked" and Fernanda Torres from "I'm Still Here" are among the names vying for Best Actress.

Other notable nominations include Edward Norton and Guy Pearce in the Best Supporting Actor category and Zoe Saldana and Isabella Rossellini for Best Supporting Actress.

"Dune: Part Two" and "Emilia PĂ©rez" also compete in technical fields like Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, and Best Visual Effects. The animated feature category sees strong contenders such as "Inside Out 2" and "Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl."
