Former First Lady Michelle Obama won't join other dignitaries at the upcoming inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, following her absence from Jimmy Carter's funeral.

The Office of Barack and Michelle Obama issued a statement confirming that "Former President Barack Obama is confirmed to attend the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies. Former first lady Michelle Obama will not attend the upcoming inauguration."
However, no explanation was provided for her absence at such a significant event.
Michelle Obama also did not attend the state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter in Washington, DC. At that gathering, Trump and Obama were joined by former Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, along with their spouses, as well as current commander-in-chief Joe Biden.
This isn't the first time a high-profile individual has skipped a presidential inauguration. Donald Trump himself did not attend Joe Biden's inauguration in 2021 after losing the election, highlighting that such decisions, while rare, do happen among prominent political figures.
Back in 2017, Michelle Obama was among the notable attendees at Trump's first inauguration alongside all other former presidents and their spouses at the time, including Hillary Clinton, who had lost the 2016 presidential election to Trump.
