AceShowbiz - "Dancing with the Stars" kicked off its season 33 on Tuesday, September 17. In the premiere, 13 new celebrities made their way to the ballroom for the first time as they competed for the coveted Len Goodman Mirror Ball Trophy. Carrie Ann Inaba, Derek Hough and Bruno Tonioli returned as the judges.
The first celebrity pair to hit the dance floor that night was Joey Graziadei and Jenna Johnson. For his first performance, "The Bachelor" alum opted to dance a Cha Cha to Tyler Hubbard's "Dancing in the Country". Derek thought it was "fantastic," while Bruno praised Joey's timing and musicality. The judges gave Joey 21 out of 30.
Following it up, Brooks Nader and her pro dancer partner Gleb Savchenko danced a Tango to "Piece of Me" by Britney Spears. Carrie Ann dubbed it a "hot" performance, but suggested Brooks to work on her contact. As for Bruno, he pointed out that Brooks got a bit wobbly during her performance. The Sports Illustrated model earned 18 out of 30.
Ilona Maher and Alan Bersten performed next, dancing a Cha Cha to Shania Twain's "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!". Carrie Ann suggested the Olympic rugby player use all that muscle to power her movements. Derek could see she was nervous and told her to work on her confidence. Ilona got 18 out of 30.
Later, Reginald VelJohnson and Emma Slater danced a Salsa to "Motownphilly" by Boyz II Men. Bruno said Reginald's performance was internal and minimized as he demanded more steps. Derek echoed the sentiment, saying that it was very compact, but he made it work. Reginald earned 16 out of 30.
It was later time for Danny Amendola and Witney Carson to hit the ballroom to dance a Tango to Shaboozey's "A Bar Song (Tipsy)". Bruno gushed over the NFL player's power, focus and determination. Carrie Ann, on the other hand, loved his focus, though she urged him to show more personality. Danny was given 20 out of 30.
Tori Spelling and her pro dancer partner Pasha Pashkov followed it up with a Foxtrot to "Trustfall" by Pink. Carrie Ann said the "Beverly Hills, 90210" alum's performance was shaky and vulnerable. Derek noted her stiffness and tension, but he could see some beautiful lines. The judges gave the reality TV star 17 out 30.
Jenn Tran and Sasha Farber later hit the ballroom to dance a Cha Cha to "Flowers" by Miley Cyrus. Derek thought Jenn found a "perfect match with Sasha," adding, "You have so much potential." Carrie Ann said, "That was so entertaining. I loved every minute of it." Jenn received 19 out of 30.
NBA champion Dwight Howard and Daniella Karagach later performed a Salsa to "This Is How We Do It" by Montell Jordan. "It's like watching a giraffe and a gazelle dance to together," Derek commented. Bruno thought it was a sparkling debut, adding that Dwight had a natural connection. Dwight got 22 out of 30.
Eric Roberts and Britt Stewart then danced a Cha Cha to Bob Seger's "Old Time Rock & Roll". Derek pointed out that some pieces didn't seem to fit each other. Carrie Ann, meanwhile, appreciated Eric for being there. Eric got 15 out of 30.
"The Real Housewives of Atlanta" star Phaedra Parks and Valentin Chmerkovskiy danced a Cha Cha to "I'm Every Woman" by Chaka Khan. Bruno told her, "You have all the elements, you can sell it." Carrie Ann also said that she was "genuinely impressed." She added, "That was a really great performance." Phaedra got 19 out of 30.
Dancing a Jive to "Don't Stop Me Now" by Queen was Olympian Stephen Nedoroscik and Rylee Arnold. Carrie Ann was amused, telling Stephen, "You are so entertaining and so light on your feet." She, however, advised him to "point those toes." Stephen got the highest score that night with 21 out 30.
Anna Delvey and Ezra Sosa concluded the night as they hit the ballroom amid controversy surrounding her casting on the show. For her performance, the con artist danced a Cha Cha to Sabrina Carpenter's hit "Espresso". Derek commented, "I'm kind of like, lost for words a little bit because you actually have the facility to be a really beautiful dancer." Carrie Ann added, "This is about your dancing here. Let's all give her that space, please." Anna got 18 out of 30.
There was no elimination in the premiere. However, two pair would be sent home in double elimination next week.
