AceShowbiz - In the Hulu documentary "Child Star", Demi Lovato explores the challenges of being a child star and opens up about her past struggles. Among the topics she discusses is her experience filming "Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam".
Lovato recalls that during the first "Camp Rock" film, she and the other cast members had a close bond and felt like equals. However, after her successful music career and role on the series "Sonny with a Chance", her status changed.
"Then my career exploded, and all of a sudden I was staying at the Four Seasons," Lovato said. "There was definitely a power dynamic and a shift in that, when the second movie came, it felt really validating because I had been leveled up, but I was trading connection for success."
Alyson Stoner, who played Caitlyn in the "Camp Rock" films, recalls feeling distant from Lovato during "The Final Jam". "I remember that it felt so hard to access you in that way," they said. "We had lost that thread of trust, we had lost that closeness. It didn't seem maybe like you wanted to be reached either at that point."
Lovato acknowledged the difficult period in her career at the time but took accountability for her actions. "I know that we both were going through our own stuff, but it still didn't give me an excuse to treat anyone poorly, and so I just want to genuinely, deeply apologize for any stress, or any hurt feelings," she said. "And I look back at that time, and I have profound sadness, 'cause I'm like, 'How many people did I treat poorly?' "
Stoner did note their struggles with dissociation during their early stardom. "I think I was dissociated kind of throughout the whole journey," they explained. "On the outside, you look like everything's okay. And then years later, you can't remember a thing."
Despite the challenges they faced on the "Camp Rock 2" set, Lovato and Stoner remain in touch. They laughed together while reminiscing about the first film and shared a heartfelt moment as Lovato apologized for her behavior.
"Child Star", which is co-directed by Lovato, is now streaming on Hulu. It offers a candid look at the pressures and consequences of growing up in the spotlight.
