AceShowbiz - Quentin Tarantino has weighed in on the deadly "Rust" shooting involving Alec Baldwin. When discussing the matter with Bill Maher on the "Club Random" podcast, the director explained why Alec is "10 percent" responsible for the ordeal.
"That's the kind of f**k up that happens that undermines an entire industry," the 61-year-old said of the shooting. "You don’t need nervous people; you want people to go for it. That's the last thing you want is nervous people, you want, 'We're all in this together, and we're going to capture this exciting thing on film.' "
"It's a situation, I think I'm being fair enough to say, that the armorer - the guy who handles the gun - is 90% responsible for everything that happens when it comes to that gun, but... the actor's 10% responsible," he elaborated. "It's a gun. You are a partner in the responsibility, to some degree."
When Maher asked, "So what do you do to test it?" Tarantino answered, "They show it to you." The filmmaker continued, "If there are steps to go through, you go through them. And it's done with due diligence, and you know it's f**king for real all right."
"What should he have done?" Maher asked. "Should he have looked into the barrel?"
"If he went through the steps that he was supposed to go through... like the barrel is clear, they show you the barrel is clear and that there is nothing ... wedged in there. They actually show you the barrel," Tarantino claimed. "And then they show you some version of, 'Here are the blanks and here is the gun.' Now it's ready to go."
Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed when a prop gun handled by Alec Baldwin was discharged. Film armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed and first assistant director Dave Halls were convicted in the case, while Baldwin's involuntary manslaughter charge was dismissed in July.
