AceShowbiz - Billie Eilish's "What Was I Made For?" visuals is finally out. The self-directed music video, which arrived on Thursday, July 13, shows the "Happier Than Ever" hitmaker channeling a retro Barbie while singing about dealing with emptiness.
Wearing a yellow dress with blonde hair, the 21-year-old sits on a chair while trying to arrange Barbie clothes on a tiny rack in a green room. However, it starts to get windy and rains pour in, leaving the singer frustrated.
"I used to float/ Now I just fall down/ I used to know, but I'm not sure now/ What I was made for/ What was I made for?" the Grammy winner sings on the emotional track. "Takin' a drive, I was an idea/ Looked so alive, turns out, I'm not real/ Just something you paid for/ What was I made for?"
Billy first teased the MV on Thursday. Sharing the short clip on Instagram, she simply captioned it, "TOMORROW." The official Instagram account of the "Barbie" movie reacted in the comments section, "we're ready."
One day prior to that, Billie unleashed a photo of her with the same outfit and hairdo. Alongside the snap, she declared, " 'What Was I Made For?' SONG AND VIDEO COMING THIS THURSDAAAAAAYYYYY!!!!! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! i caaaaaaaan't wait to see what you think !! that s**t hurted."
"What Was I Made For" features contributions from Billie's Grammy-winning older brother, FINNEAS. The siblings previously won an Oscar for best original song in 2022 for co-writing the title song from the James Bond film "No Time to Die".
"What Was I Made For?" is lifted off the "Barbie" soundtrack. Executive produced by Academy Award-winning songwriter and Grammy-winning producer Mark Ronson, the soundtrack is also set to feature songs from the likes of Lizzo, Fifty Fifty, Kali, Gayle, Khalid, Haim and Ava Max.
A slew of singles have already been released from the soundtrack, including two that have reached the Billboard Hot 100, Dua Lipa's "Dance the Night" (No. 31) and Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice and AQUA's "Barbie World" (No. 7). The soundtrack album will hit the shelves the same day "Barbie" opens in U.S. theaters, on July 21.
