Black Widow Film Lands Cate Shortland as Director
Marvel Studios
Movie

The 'Berlin Syndrome' and 'Somersault' helmer is tapped for the standalone film which will see Scarlett Johansson reprising her role as Black Widow.

AceShowbiz - Scarlett Johansson will team up with writer/director Cate Shortland for her stand-alone "Black Widow" movie.

Talk of the project has been rumbling ever since the actress joined the Marvel Comics Universe in "Iron Man 2" back in 2010 and now fans of the Avengers heroine are celebrating following the news of Lore director Shortland's hiring.

Reports suggest Marvel bosses met with over 60 filmmakers over the past 18 months before agreeing to hand the job to Shortland earlier this week (begin July 09).

It's a big risk for Marvel, as Australian Shortland only has nine director credits to her name - and only four are full-length features.

She also directed "Berlin Syndrome" and "Somersault".

The filmmaker has won a string of awards Down Under, landing the 2013 Australian Directors Guild Award for Best Direction for her acclaimed Nazi drama "Lore". She also picked up Australian Film Critics Association Awards for Best Director and Best Screenplay for the project.

Meanwhile, "Somersault" landed her Australian Film Institute honours for directing and screenplay.

The stand-alone "Black Widow" film will reportedly be set before the first Avengers movie, which hit cinemas in 2012.
