AceShowbiz - Disgraced actor Bill Cosby is asking judges at the U.S. Supreme Court to review his Janice Dickinson defamation case.

Dickinson sued Cosby in 2015, claiming a statement by his former lawyer, Marty Singer, in which he called her a liar after she accused The Cosby Show star of drugging and raping her in 1982, was defamatory.

The court ruled that Singer acted with malice in his November, 2014 letter to multiple media outlets, in which he called the former model's allegations to Entertainment Tonight "fabricated and an outright lie".

He also accused Janice of "seeking publicity to bolster her fading career".

A judge ruled Dickinson was not able to include Singer in her original lawsuit and the case was subsequently dismissed, but an appeals judge granted her permission to sue the actor and his attorney and move forward with her case in November (17).

Cosby subsequently filed an appeal, but a California Supreme Court judge denied his motion and now he is hoping U.S. Supreme Court justices will review the case.

According to Deadline, Cosby's attorney Becky James is arguing Singer's denial is protected by free speech rights in the U.S., and lawyers should not have to fear legal repercussions after issuing statements.

James is also asking for an extension until 12 July, so she can prepare her argument for an appeal.

Cosby's new legal appeal comes less than two months after he was found guilty of drugging and raping former Temple University employee Andrea Constand during a 2004 incident at his home in Pennsylvania. The 80-year-old actor, who has always maintained the sex was consensual, faces up to 30 years in prison.

Sentencing has been set for for September.
