Weinstein's wife and fashion designer Georgina Chapman says she's leaving him as her 'heart breaks for all the women who have suffered tremendous pain because of these unforgivable actions.'

AceShowbiz - Harvey Weinstein and his wife, Georgina Chapman, have split amid his sexual assault allegations. In a statement released to PEOPLE, the Marchesa designer says she's decided to leave the disgraced movie mogul as she needs time away from him to take care of their kids, 7-year-old India Pearl and 4 year-old Max Robert.

"My heart breaks for all the women who have suffered tremendous pain because of these unforgivable actions," Chapman, 41, says in the statement, which was released on Tuesday, October 10. "I have chosen to leave my husband. Caring for my young children is my first priority and I ask the media for privacy at this time."

In a statement released by his spokesperson, Weinstein, 65, says, "I support her decision, I am in counseling and perhaps, when I am better, we can rebuild." Weinstein, who has been married to Chapman since 2007, goes on saying that "over the last week, there has been a lot of pain for my family that I take responsibility for."

"I sat down with my wife Georgina, who I love more than anything, and we discussed what was best for our family. We discussed the possibility of a separation and I encouraged her to do what was in her heart," he shares. "I understand, I love her and I love our children and hopefully, when I am better, I will be in their lives again," he adds.

The split comes less than a week after the New York Times published a report exposing "Decades of Sexual Harassment Accusations Against Harvey Weinstein." The powerful Hollywood producer took a leave of absence from The Weinstein Company the day the story broke, but was subsequently fired by his own company on Sunday, October 8.

Weinstein initially said his wife Chapman was standing behind him in the wake of the sexual harassment scandal. "She stands 100 percent behind me. Georgina and I have talked about this at length," he told The Post, adding that Chapman was helping him become "a better human" and to "apologize to people for my bad behavior, to say I'm sorry, and to absolutely mean it."

Weinstein's attorney said last week that the producer's preparing to sue the Times for $50 million for a story that "is saturated with false and defamatory statements." Numerous Hollywood stars have come forward to speak up against the movie mogul, including Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet and Jessica Chastain.
