The British singer briefly talks about his exit from One Direction while discussing his first times in an interview for Glamour magazine's new issue.

If you still find Zayn Malik's departure from One Direction devastating, you can blame this alien that once appeared in his dream. Speaking to Glamour magazine for its August 2016 issue, the 23-year-old singer talked about various things including his decision to leave the band.
Asked when he first realized that he no longer wanted to be in the group, which he was a part of for five years, and that he wanted to start a solo career, the British singer simply said, "An alien spoke to me in a dream."
He didn't say anything else about the weird dream, but he did discuss in the interview other interesting things about his life. He revealed the first tattoo he had (the name of his granddad Walter, spelled in Arabic), his first celebrity crush (Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen), his first musical inspiration (Michael Jackson's "Thriller") and what he did with his first-ever paycheck (buying a beanie).
Zayn announced his exit from One Direction more than a year ago. Since then, he has topped the Billboard charts with his first solo album "Mind of Mine" and its lead single "Pillowtalk".
