Zayn Malik said One Direction was not what he wanted for a career from the very start. The 23-year-old singer sat down with Beats 1 Radio's Zane Lowe to reveal why he finally quit the mega-selling band last year.

"I think I always kind of wanted to go, from the first year, really," Malik told Lowe. "I never really wanted to be there in the band, I just gave it a go because it was there at the time." He said inability to contribute musically to the band pulled the last string. "I realized I couldn't put any input in. I couldn't give my opinion on this or that because it didn't fit the grain of what we were or what we represented," he said.

Even the other boys knew he did not fit in well. "I think the boys kind of knew, in terms of the music, that wasn't my cup of tea," the Brit said. When he told his bandmates about his plan to exit the band, neither Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson nor Niall Horran prevented him from doing so. "They obviously didn't want me to leave, but they couldn't talk me out of it at that point. I'd already made my mind up," Malik revealed.

Malik is on the verge of unveiling his first solo single "Pillowtalk". The full radio interview will air Thursday, January 28 on Apple Music's Beats 1 Radio at 9 A.M. ET.

When asked by Sunday Times Culture magazine about a potential reunion with 1D, he said, "Who knows?...I don't know. If the time was right and that was the thing to do, then I would make that decision when it came around."
