The seventh installment of the 'Star Wars' movie series earned $42.4 million in domestic box office, beating out Leonardo DiCaprio's 'The Revenant'.

AceShowbiz - "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" managed to stay atop North America box office for the fourth weekend in a row. The seventh episode of the "Star Wars" movie franchise defeated Alejandro G. Inarritu's "The Revenant", grossing $42.4 million from 4,134 theaters.

"The Force Awakens" also set another record with its $812.7 million domestic haul. It became the first movie in history to cross $800 million, surpassing "Avatar" ($760.5 million) and "Titanic" ($658.7 million).

Having just opened in China on Saturday, "The Force Awakens" earned $53 million over two days and became China's biggest Saturday-Sunday opening of all time. Globally, the movie garnered $1.73 billion, outpacing "Jurassic World" ($1.67 billion) to become the third-biggest global movie of all time

Taking the second position in the chart behind the "Star Wars" movie was "The Revenant". The Leonardo DiCaprio starrer, which expanded from four theaters to 3,375 this weekend, added another $38 million. Combined with its revenues from the two weeks of limited release, the total gross of "The Revenant" was $39.8 million.

"Quality prevails," said Chris Aronson, Fox's domestic distribution chief. "This is a real, reality-based film drawn from true events. It's a motion picture that was made in the most arduous of circumstances and the end result is just a fantastic achievement."

The only newcomer in the top 10 this weekend was "The Forest", which opened slightly above expectation with $12.7 million from 2,451 theaters. The Natalie Dormer starrer was in the fourth position, coming behind Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell's comedy "Daddy's Home", which earned $15 million from 3,483 theaters in its third weekend for a domestic total of $116.3 million.

Rounding out the top five was holdover "Sisters", which added another $7.2 million for a domestic total of $74.9 million.
