Although Caitlyn Jenner introduced her new identity on the cover of Vanity Fair's July issue, her transformation became official only recently. Superior Court Judge Gerald Rosenberg has approved her legal request to formally change her name from Bruce Jenner to Caitlyn.
According to The Associated Press, the E! reality star said in her legal documents that she sought the name change "to better match my identity." She was presented by two lawyers and was not present during the hearing. To get a judge's approval, she filed a medical declaration under seal.
Some other details that accompanied her petition were also kept under wraps after Jenner cited privacy concerns and threats she said she had received during her transition. "Although public support for my transition has been overwhelmingly supportive, I am also receiving unwelcome negative attention from private citizens, including threats of bodily harm," she wrote in a sworn declaration.
Jenner's official name is now Caitlyn Marie Jenner, replacing her birth name of William Bruce Jenner. The approval also means that she will be able to get documents like a driver's license and Social Security card that conform to her new identity.
In a previous episode of her docu-series "I Am Cait", she talked to LGBT advocate, Drian Juarez, about the name-changing process. "After hearing all the struggles people go through because they don't have the proper documentation, I realized that I should be a little bit more aggressive in dealing with this issue of my identity," she said. "I think it's time to get that process started."
