'Star Wars Rogue One' to Feature Digitally Recreated Grand Moff Tarkin

The first installment of 'Star Wars' anthology series will reportedly feature Peter Cushing's Tarkin which will be digitally recreated using CGI techniques.

AceShowbiz - Peter Cushing, who played primary antagonist Grand Moff Tarkin in 1977's "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope", will appear in "Star Wars" anthology movie "Rogue One", Daily Mail reports. Cushing, who died in 1994 at the age of 81, is being brought back to life for the upcoming movie with the help of sophisticated computer technology.

Cushing will be digitally recreated using CGI technique in the film which is currently being filmed in Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire. "This is one of the most complex and costly CGI re-creations ever. Cushing is a pivotal plot line as he was the one to create Darth Vader and there's a whole back story that will come out," a source told the site.

Digital artist for the film have encountered an obstacle in the recreating the figure. They found it difficult to create Cushing's legs and feet. That's because in the original film, cameramen only shot from knees up and never showed Cushing's body from the waist down. Cushing insisted to wear slipper instead of a pair of leather riding boots when filming the movie because the boots were uncomfortable.

"They are going through hours and hours of old footage from the horror movies to recreate his legs and feet to produce realistic movements," the source continued. "It is eerie to see someone who has been dead for so long come to life on a screen."

Taking place between "Episode III" and "Episode IV", "Rogue One" will be a movie about rebels trying to steal the plans to the Death Star, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet. Felicity Jones, Ben Mendelsohn, Sam Claflin, Riz MC, Diego Luna and Forest Whitaker star in the movie which is slated to open in U.S. theaters on December 16, 2016.
