TV

David Schwimmer is returning to TV with FX's new miniseries "American Crime Story". The actor/director has landed a recurring role as Robert Kardashian in the first season of the anthology series from Ryan Murphy.

Kardashian, the late father of Kim Kardashian, was O.J. Simpson's friend and later his attorney during his trial. The first season will examine the trial as told from the perspective of the lawyers that explores the chaotic behind-the-scenes dealings and maneuvering on both sides of the court, and how a combination of prosecution confidence, defense wiliness, and the LAPD's history with the city's African-American community gave a jury what it needed: reasonable doubt.

It's based on Jeffrey Toobin's "The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson". Like Murphy's anthology series "American Horror Story" which has been a hit on FX, "American Crime Story" will explore a different famous true crime each season.

Schwimmer, best known as Ross Geller on NBC's "Friends", joins Cuba Gooding Jr. and Sarah Paulson who were earlier cast as Simpson and prosecutor Marcia Clark respectively. Production is slated to begin early 2015 in Los Angeles.

Schwimmer last appeared on the small screen on "Web Therapy" starring another "Friends" alum, Lisa Kudrow. Last pilot season, he was cast in the lead role for ABC's pilot "Irreversible", but the project never saw the light of the day. He recently directed the pilot of NBC's sitcom "Growing Up Fisher" which was canceled by the network after only one season.
