BET Awards 2012: Jay-Z, Kanye West and Chris Brown Among Early Winners

Jigga and Yezzy win the Best Group kudo, Chris Brown is hailed Best Male Artist, and Big Sean nabs the Best New Artist Award.

AceShowbiz - The 2012 BET Awards has been kicked off Sunday, July 1 in Los Angeles and handed out some of the prizes. The first award announced that night was for Best Group which went to The Throne, which consisted of Jay-Z and Kanye West.

Yeezy initially accepted the award alone, saying, "I wish Jay-Z was here to say something politically correct for me." Shortly after, Jigga surprised his duet partner as he also arrived on stage.

Also already bagging one kudo was Chris Brown, who made his first award-event appearance post his bar brawl with Drake. The "Sweet Love" crooner edged out Bruno Mars, Miguel, Trey Songz and Usher for the Best Male R&B Artist title.

Big Sean was another early winner, snatching Best New Artist. He beat out A$AP Rocky, Diggy Simmons and Meek Mill to get the honor. Another musician, Wale, won Best Collaboration for "Lotus Flower Bomb" featuring Miguel. In acting field, Kevin Hart shone as he's named the Best Actor. Meanwhile, Serena Williams and Kevin Durant were Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year respectively.

BET Awards is currently taking place at the Shrine Auditorium with Samuel L. Jackson serving as the host. Kanye West, Big Sean and 2 Chainz opened the event with a performance of "Mercy". Jackson and Spike Lee later delivered a parody of Jigga and Weezy's song "Ni**as in Paris".
