Tony Bennett had an opinion that U.S. caused the 9/11 attacks but he quickly realized he may have upset several people. In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 20, the 85-year-old said, "I am sorry if my statements suggested anything other than an expression of my love for my country, my hope for humanity and my desire for peace throughout the world."
Bennett first shocked with his statement during Howard Stern interview. "They flew the plane in, but we caused it," Bennett told Stern, as quoted by New York Daily News. The "they" here is presumably terrorists. He also revealed that George W. Bush told him at a party that the Iraq war was a mistake.
Regarding his remark about Bush, a spokesman for the former U.S. president clarified that the account is "flatly wrong". Spokesman Freddy Ford said, "President Bush has always felt, and consistently expressed, that America is safer without Saddam Hussein in power. He has never said the decision to liberate Iraq was a mistake to Mr. Bennett or to anyone."
