Dru Hill
Dru Hill is an American R&B boy band that emerged from Baltimore, Maryland, in the early 1990s, gaining prominence in the late 1990s with their distinct blend of R&B, soul, and gospel music. Founded by Tamir "Nokio the N-Tity" Ruffin, the group also included lead singer Mark "Sisqó" Andrews, Larry "Jazz" Anthony, and James "Woody" Green. They are well-known for their soulful harmonies and captivating performances, which helped them secure a lasting legacy in the R&B genre.
The group's journey began in 1992 when they caught the attention of A. Haqq Islam, who signed them to University Records, an imprint of Island Records' burgeoning urban division. Their self-titled debut album, Dru Hill, was released in 1996 and featured hit singles such as "In My Bed" and "Never Make a Promise." The album's success established them as a prominent act in the music scene, showcasing their unique sound and dynamic vocal abilities.
In 1998, Dru Hill released their second album, Enter the Dru, which continued their streak of success. However, after a series of personal and professional challenges, the group went on hiatus from late 1999 to 2002. During this time, members pursued solo careers, with Sisqó achieving significant fame through his debut solo album, Unleash the Dragon, which included chart-topping hits like "Thong Song" and "Incomplete." Meanwhile, Woody released his album, Soul Music, finding a niche in the gospel music industry.
The reunion of Dru Hill in 2002 marked a new chapter for the group as they signed with Def Soul, part of a label merger that included Island, Def Jam Recordings, and Universal Music Group. They added a fifth member, Scola, and released their third album, Dru World Order. Unfortunately, the album did not perform as well as anticipated, leading to their eventual departure from Def Soul in 2004 due to issues regarding productivity.
In 2009, Dru Hill signed with Kedar Entertainment Group and released their fourth album, InDRUpendence Day, in 2005. This album featured new member Tao, who replaced Woody after his departure. Despite the shifts in their lineup and the challenges they faced, Dru Hill has remained a significant influence in R&B music, known for their engaging performances and the ability to connect with fans through their heartfelt lyrics.
Throughout their career, Dru Hill has garnered several accolades and recognition, including seven Billboard Hot 100 top 40 hits. Their singles "In My Bed," "Never Make a Promise," and "How Deep Is Your Love" have become classics in the R&B genre, solidifying their place in music history. As they continue to perform and create, Dru Hill remains a beloved group, celebrated for their contributions to the evolution of R&B music and their lasting impact on fans around the world.
