Peggy lives the dream that she never could during her teens and becomes an assistant coach for the cheerleading squad. She is convinced that she can bring new vitality to a dull and unexciting cheerleading squad. However, she struggles to gain any control within the squad as head coach, Jo Rita, refuses to give Peggy any real responsibility. The football team continues its losing streak while the cheerleaders continue their mundane cheers until Peggy takes a stance and leads both squad and fans in an uplifting cheer.
To their surprise, the Arlen football team takes the lead and wins the game. The principal names Peggy as the Head Coach leaving Jo Rita in the wings, and the football team continues towards victory. In an effort to continue the football winning streak, Peggy resorts to violent strategies to prove her abilities as a cheerleading coach. She convinces Bobby to dress up as the opposing team's mascot, while the cheerleaders beat it to the ground. Peggy's tactics seem unstoppable until one team refuses to play when their Irish mascot is disgraced. Although the Arlen team receives the win, Peggy is accused of committing a hate crime, is banned from any further football activities, and the squad returns to its mundane cheers under Jo Rita's instruction. Peggy is devastated at seeing her cheerleading dreams conclude, but is uplifted when she hears the squad chanting her cheer, and leading Arlen to another football victory.
