'24' Spin-Off Centering on New Male Character Is in the Works

After being revived in a limited series, "" may get a spin-off. Executive producer and showrunner of the original series, Howard Gordon, told TVLine at the Critics Choice Television Awards on Sunday, May 31 that FOX was developing a "24" spin-off centering a new male lead character.

The plan is to pair the twentysomething male terrorist hunter with "an older, more seasoned female agent." It's noted that the said female agent is not 's Kate Morgan, although there's a chance she appears on the spin-off. The project is currently envisioned as a limited series, but may get more seasons in the future. 's Jack Bauer may also appear as a guest star throughout the run of the spin-off.

FOX talks the future of "". During the Television Critics Association panel this weekend, the network's executives Dana Walden and Gary Newman tease their plan for the next installment. "We would love nothing more than to do another 24. That's a constant focus for us," Newman said.

Nothing has been set in stone just yet, but they are mulling over the idea of focusing the next story on the supporting characters although the leading man may reprise his role later in other future installment.

U.S. President Taylor stopped Bauer from doing so and advised him to get out of the country because not only the Russians will hunt him down if he does, but the States too.

As rating begins to slip in its current season, producers of "" take the measure of ending the show with 8 seasons. The two-hour series finale will air on May 24 but FOX will first air 11 hours of uninterrupted episodes every Monday nights.

"If they said tomorrow that you have a ninth season, it's not something we'd be up for because we realize Jack's story in the real-time format has been told," exec producer Howard Gordon said of the cancellation. Show's star added, "This has been the role of a lifetime, and I will never be able to fully express my appreciation to everyone who made it possible."

The studio and FOX would not comment on this but a final decision is expected within the next few days. Should the report is true, then "24" will pull down the curtain on May 24 with a two-hour finale.

While the official announcement is yet to be made, the show's rating this season provides a support to the move. "24" usually rakes in more than 11 million viewers in average with the highest being 13 million in season 5. Although this season is not falling below the par, the production cost is increasing especially with the additional actors.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Sutherland went under the knife last Tuesday, February 16 but he has been cleared by doctors to return to work next week.

Production of FOX's "" is temporarily shut down until its leading star is well enough to get back on the set. , released a statement via his publicist on Sunday, February 14 that he regrets missing several days of work because he needs a surgery for a ruptured cyst near his kidney.

"While Kiefer Sutherland is frustrated to miss even one day of work, he and Fox decided together that it would be best to complete this minor elective procedure now," the actor's publicist said in a statement. The cyst actually ruptured last week but the production is only halted this week because the production went on without Sutherland until Friday, February 12.

Malek's Marcos is an Arab American with sympathies toward radical Islam while Titizian's Nabeel is in charge of President Hassan's (Anil Kapoor) safety. Nabeel in particular will work against Mehran (Mido Hamada), the leader of an operative group in an Islamic country who seeks to harm the president. Little is known about Morris' character.
