'Spider-Man' Spin-Off 'Venom' Is Back in Development at Sony
Movie

A scribe has been hired to pen the script and take the project to a whole new franchise, separated from the upcoming 'Spider-Man' reboot.

"Venom" is a reboot that almost did not happen. Sony is putting the wheels back in motion almost two years after killing off "The Amazing Spider-Man" spin-off project.

Dante Harper, an up-and-coming scribe who did rewrite work on "Edge of Tomorrow", is tapped to write the script, THR reports. Unlike the initial plan, "Venom Carnage" will be "envisioned as a franchise apart from and unrelated to the upcoming Spider-Man movie" which stars Tom Holland.

Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach remain the producers and will oversee the project. Meanwhile, Palak Patel and Eric Fineman are overseeing the movie for Sony's Columbia label.

Although it's unclear which incarnation of Venom would be portrayed in the Sony pic, Arad suggested in 2012, "It's an Eddie Brock story. We want to be as close to the comics as possible. Especially in Eddie Brock's story. But again, pseudo-science is becoming science."

Venom appeared as the villain in "Spider-Man 3", played by Topher Grace. Throughout its development, the spin-off had involved such people as Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Gary Ross and Josh Trank among others.
