U2 recently made a surprise appearance at the stage of Sean Penn's third annual "Help Haiti" benefit in Beverly Hills' Montage Hotel. It marked the Irish band's first time to perform together on a stage in four years.

They played "I Will Follow", "Desire" and "Vertigo" for guests that included Bette Midler, Michael Douglas, Chelsea Handler, Gwyneth Paltrow, Charlize Theron, Piers Morgan, Sarah Silverman and Idris Elba. Earlier in the night, U2's vocalist Bono took to the stage for an acoustic performance with guitarist The Edge and Haitian singer Anaelle Jean-Pierre.

The event raised $6 million for the J/P Haitian Relief Organization, which has been working since the 2010 earthquake to provide emergency care and sustainable shelter and education to the people of Haiti.

CNN's Anderson Cooper, who hosted the evening, made the biggest donation that night. Cooper bid $1.4 million to win a sculpture that will be made out of Penn's 65 discarded firearms.
