'Up All Night' and 'Whitney' Picked Up, 'Playboy Club' Axed

NBC is pleased with the performance of the two comedies which have built loyal audience over a few episodes but is unhappy with the drama's ratings.

NBC gave two of its new freshmen a vote of confidence and one a grave. "Up All Night" and "Whitney" have been picked up for a full-season but "The Playboy Club" is meeting a dead end because the network is making comedy "an important goal" for them this season.

NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt said in a statement, "We're thrilled with the creative direction of both shows as well as the potential for them to continue to build loyal audiences over the coming months. We're proud of all of the producers, writers, actors, and directors who have worked so hard to bring these shows to life."

"Playboy Club", which is 1960s-set story about the Chicago Playboy Club, had been receiving low rating since its premiere. PTC's protests against the show's sexuality led to advertisers quitting its commitments. Repeats of "Prime Suspect" will now air on Mondays at 10 P.M. until "Rock Center" takes the slot beginning October 31.

"Up All Night" is led by Christina Applegate and Will Arnett who play a married couple switching roles as breadwinner and homemaker. Meanwhile, "Whitney" is staring Whitney Cummings as a woman who swims hard against the current to not plunge herself into marriage.
