There is a chance that Adam Lambert was the actual winner of "American Idol" this season. The New York Times is reporting that the final number of votes that determined the winner in the May 20 finale, may have been faltered when AT&T reps gave fans of crowned winner Kris Allen a special phone with benefits.
AT&T as the biggest sponsor of the show as well as the single phone network that can be used to cast the text message votes, reportedly provided phones with free text-messaging and a multiple message sending program called Power Text. Thus fans can easily send a number of text messages and hit a single button.
These phones were allegedly distributed at two parties organized by Allen's fans in Arkansas after the final performance on May 19. The same thing apparently did not happen to Adam who only got a customized phone from the phone provider when he held a homecoming parade before the semi-final.
"Idol" itself had emphasized the rule at the end of every episode that blocks of votes using "technical enhancements" is potential to be counted out. No rep from the show has given any statement regarding the allegations, but fans of Adam have been flooding the chat boards and other online media to demand a fair recount.
Meanwhile, AT&T has released the following statement: "In Arkansas, we were invited to attend the local watch parties organized by the community. A few local employees brought a small number of demo phones with them and provided texting tutorials to those who were interested."
The loss of Adam Lambert to Kris Allen has sent a wave of shock to many, including celebrities. Kim Kardashian previously said, "I am not gonna lie, I am shocked Adam did not win American Idol! I think Kris (Allen) is talented, has an amazing voice and is adorable but Adam just has IT! Regardless, I think Adam will go on to make many albums and be really successful, as Kris will be too. I don't know, maybe Kris is the safer choice..."

A journalist here wrote personally about her disgust and shock at the results and the scam. Kris has won the crown, but he is not the best this season or past seasons. And I strongly believe future ones, there will be many more like him auditioning. And he would not stand out in World Idol at all. But if Adam had won, America would have been much glorified in this recession. Because he is simply the best all seasons. We want to see performance and showmanship and talent and CDs, VCDs. A real idol. Now the Arkansas Idol has become a laughing stock. Not watching AI so it does not matter. Just following Adam. If he can join Queen, that would instantly propel him to greatness.

IT IS THE PRINCIPLE and if you add up the numbers mathematically, it is compounded and can make an astronomical difference. 1 press = 10 votes versus 1 press = 1 vote. And the former is free somemore. 4 hours = 14400. Kris = 144,000 votes Adam = 14,400 votes. This is just for one person. For 100 persons, the difference between the 2 would be 12,960,000. And they are saying they gave or loaned out 1000 phones? Can you explain why Arkansas population of less than 3 million can cast more than 38 million votes? Obviously it’s not correct. Think about it. ON THAT NIGHT, Adam's folders were flooded with frustration about not getting text CONFIRMATIONS and lines not getting through. For the lines, we thought it is a good sign. And many did not get their text confirmations. Well.....leave much to be pondered. How are you going to address the fans' frustrations? With a sweep of your statement. The World shouts nonsense at the results. And in a statement on their website, AI has announced that power voting is not acceptable and will be purged. Do they practiced what they say? Irregardless this finale is already tainted. Adam, we know you are not whining and both you and Kris are innocent victims, but there is a beast up there and we want to have justice because we are talking about the phenomenal Adam. And this is kind of funny......and its kind of sad............. WE will never believe in this show anymore. Let them produce many more Krisses. There are too many questions left unturned!! And the biggest loser is the reputation of all those involved in this cheat whether intentional or not. The damage to it has been done. In a private corporation, people engaged in conflict of interests would have been fired.

That fateful day, my office people were pointing to their Yahoo PC at Adam's picture and saying HE SHOULD HAVE WON! Adamlys - don't pay your bill. I was following ADam's folders. They were telling people to vote hard (by sweat and tears). Yes, they are aware of power votes, but they have to buy their own phones and paid for it if they want to do this. How many can afford? Anyone who appreciates "real" music should know that this entire voting thing was a hoax. It was rigged by AT & T and the various voting stations set up in Arkansas. (Some to tie up Adams lines by staying on the call the entire length of the message, and some to vote and hang up every couple of seconds for Kris) I could not cast one vote in 4 hours for Adam - this was the first Idol contestant I have ever wanted to vote for. Something is wrong with the voting and it should be investigated thorougly. Maybe a good carrier like Verizon should climb on board and investigate their biggest competitor in the game. They would find out America voted differently.

I am SO in awe of Adam L - his version of "No Boundaries" will not doubt make Kara D a lot of money. Just amazing vocals. Didn't listen to milquetoast version - no need to destroy a perfectly good fantasy.

Like most of you, we are also dumbfounded by the results of AI 09. Chris seemed to fly under the radar for so many episodes. We didnt really notice him until the final 7. There was always someone who sang worse and wore the wrath of the judges thus Chris never got into to bottom 3. Every performance night, Adam amazed us. Its really quite frustrating living in another country and not having a say. I am not surprised that Adam fans had difficulty voting. So far no Chris fans have come forward to say that they were having the same problems. AT&T underestimated Adam's popularity and obviously the network couldnt cope - what other explanation is there - RIGGED? Chris who?

If all you cry babies would stop crying over this years winner of American Idol and stop to think that the best person, who was never in the bottom three was eliminated (Danny G). I believe Danny's fan voted for Kris not so much for his singing but because he was a nobody with talent. Adam had major musical background and should have not been allow in the show. The show is suppose to be about people with talent with no muscial following. The only thing Adam could do was wear make-up and scream. He ruined Johnny Cash's music and many others. He was to theatrical for an America Idol. I agree with many other's only so many calls per household should be allowed, like Dancing With The Stars.
i live in south africa, and we also have an idols here, that just ended when american idol began over here. The same thing happened this side. Sasha lee davids won idols, and everyone was shocked. There was something wrong with the "routes" that the voting followed. Jason Hartman came second that night. After a recount 2 days later they found out that Jason Hartman won by 200000 votes! And you know what Sasha lee, that didnt even won idols wasnt happy, but she said that its fine they can share. Jason Hartman was very happy about it. But still this whole thing is rigged and Jason's moment was stolen. And i think the same thing happened with Adam. He should have won. I was also shocked when he didnt, and so many other south africans that wanted him to win. THIS IS JUST NOT FAIR.
I find the whole voting process suspect. When AI had 12 finalists, each person had one phone line. For the finals, each finalist had three phone lines. AT&T should at the very least opened all 12 phone lines available. One phone line, one vote would be more valid. However, because it is allowed, I voted for Adam for four solid hours after the finale. For the first three hours, all I got were busy signals, which I assumed meant the phone lines were flooded for votes for Adam. Bloggers have noted that even though they had their phones programmed to dial set numbers, the call going through would thank them for voting for the other person. Ultimately, it doesn't matter who won. It's what Adam or Kris does with the exposure that counts. However, I think the person who actually won should be acknowleged and that something like this should not be allowed to happen again.
Though I do think it's good that the truth came out, I do think we should all just move on. Being an Adam fan, I am pretty outraged to read this story and know that this kind of stuff went on. It's unfair to the viewers and fans who spent the whole 4 hours voting for Adam. Despite this, I think we should just move on. The truth is out, the winner was crowned, and now we just need to focus on not letting this happen again. Kris and Adam will have their success. I think a good class action suit against Fox, AT & T and Idol would have them stop their unethical behaviors. It's gone beyond Adam or Kris. They are attempting to fool the American public. Did you see how Fox tried to sweep everything under the rug during their news show tonight? They put up an ambiguous question you couldn't really answer. They have phonied up interviews and skewed statistics. I was never so shocked in my life to see what I thought was a reputable station do what they did tonight. No remorse on their part, not even an apology to their viewers. I am no longer one of those.
In this era of dropping ratings, the last thing AI needs is a scandal of this proportion. Unless something is done to take away the big carrot for AT&T, for example, one person/one vote, these kinds of shenanigans will continue. Maybe next year in the way of penance, AI should allow no contestants from Arkansas? Just an idea. I won't participate in such a flawed 'contest' again by watching and voting. This all has worked in Adam's favor - coming in second Just look at Miss California EVERYONE knows who she is and no on knows the name of the actual winner of Miss America - Miss North (or South) who knows Carolina. I adore Adam Lambert and think he is THE most amazing talent that has ever crossed the American Idol stage - of course we know he was the best - and the funny thing is SO DID KRIS and he even said so when he "won" - the good news is that Adam will be a mega mega mega star - and if Kris hadn't won, he would have been forgotten in two minutes, so it's nice that BOTH WON - not only that, but Adam's career will take off faster and go farther since he is not locked into the AI "winner" contract - something that would have limited his choices dramatically. So basically, Adam NOT winning made him the REAL winner. And while I think that there are more important things to focus on this is something that matters to millions of people who voted. I won't watch AI next year...

We should only care who wins up until the finales, because the winners go on and we get to hear more music from the contestants we like. Since this was the finales, making Chris or Adam the winner was not going to give us anymore great songs be either. I wish both good luck and hope they make lots of records.
As an Adam fan I of course wanted him to win. But the votes are in and this was the verdict. These guys are friends and they were incredibly supportive of each other. I don't think Adam would want us to malign Kris's victory even if there were some questionable tactics. What if they were? Will it change anything? NO. America knows that Adam Lambert is an incredible talent and I still believe the majority of people wanted him to win-it just isn't reflected in the vote. We can show our support of Adam by helping his career and buying his music-in the long run I truly believe time will remember Adam as a star, and Kris will be the guy that won season 8 of Idol.

AI should look closely at the rules for voting and make necessary changes to ensure credibility. They should also conduct an analysis & audit of the votes prior to winner announcement and address any fraudulent or questionable results. AT&T is a sponsor of the show and should be totally neutral. It was inappropriate for AT&T employees to engage in offering phones or tutorials to groups during the finale. Why not just refer anyone interested to their web site for a 'texting' tutorial that is available to everyone. If fans influenced the win with actions that violate the rules, it will be revealed in due time. Keep in mind that the rubber meets the road with record sales and career longevity for any of the artists. Several who won AI in the past had limited success that fizzled out in a few short years; and others who did not win the title have more successful careers that are still alive and well. Best of luck to Kris and Adam.
As Adam has stated in his interviews that he hopes the fans make peace instead of conflict and "war". I agreed. Meanwhile, please also recognize that many Adam's fans are only asking for a closure on a somewhat flawed voting system and being taken advantage.
To think that AT&T employees in Arkansas did not care who won is ridiculous. I live here and believe me, they were rooting for Kris, so they would have done whatever they could to help me. Kris had Arkansas' vote, but I bet if the rule was "one vote one phone" Adam would have won in a landslide. Kris had the votes, but Adam has the fans. Seriously, I was of two Adam fans I could find in my hometown of Little Rock. People would say "Adam is the better singer, but I am voting for Kris." That tells you the mentality of people from a small state.

One of the parties attended by AT&T was at the University of Central Arkansas' Estes Stadium, with about 2,000 people in attendance, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported last week. The paper said display phones and company representatives were on hand to teach multiple "power texting" there, with phones and representatives also available at a watch party at the Peabody Little Rock hotel. This was quoted earlier the other party was a "Task Kris Allen Party" who knows how many were there. Whatever, Adam Lambert is better not having to deal with American Idol. This show has come a complete joke.
All this pissing and moaning is not doing Adam or Kris any good. For Adam it makes it look like he can't move on. I can only imagine how Kris feels. Adam is going to succeed and be successful no matter how inaccurate/accurate the votes are. What I think is unbelievable is that one poster here was able to vote hundreds of times. It turns this singing competition into a - competition of who can vote the most #'s of times.

I was just thinking everyone is so much "in-love" with Kris and it maybe not popular to raise any question about his title. to "Miami Kerry", it is not a few phones, and 10 vote/10sec = 3600 vote per hour per phone. On a mere 100 phone = 366000/hour x (4+3 phones were set at CA time zone) hours = 2.5M votes with only 100 phones more!! Kris and folks may have been told by landslide so they feel better... In any case, dishonest is dishonest. Having said that, Adam may not really care at this point. But it is unjust and AI should standout and correct the title and the voting for going forward so it will have credibility.

Well, I have always thought that the voting system on AI was ridiculous. I thought Adam deserved to win.....but this doesn't change his chances for success. I am sure he'll be fine. Kris will do well too. I understand people are frustrated, but I hate to see either of these two guys suffer for it. On the bright side, since Adam doesn't have the AI title, maybe he can do a really sexy pose on the cover of RS next week!
I faithfully phoned in my votes every week for my favorite idol contestant. And every week I was only able to get in maybe 4 votes using the landlines. I felt good that I had voted to support my idol. Well what a fool I was trusting that Idol had everything in hand and that the voting process is fair. I guess I should have known that the show was all hype and as everything else is totally about AI making big bucks. How much money did AT & T make off all those text votes. I read where some people proudly announced they could send 15,000 text votes over a two hour period. How could my silly cell phone calls ever compete against that. I happen to live in a small town where AT & T doesn't have coverage. So since AT & T is the only carrier you can use to vote I was stuck with my cell and landlines. AI should drop AT & T if they want to have any credibility with the public at all. If they thought their ratings were suffering before this. I think they are in for a crash. Bye Bye Idol.
It isn't a surprise here, definitely something wrong about AI result. I really think people like me using with Verizon network had some disadvantages at voting night, for example, first 3 hours, phone line couldn’t get through at all. It has to be capacity issues about handling the volume of calls. I won’t care about AI’s voting results before. This time, the result is not acceptable; it is the biggest unfair outcome in AI history – the best ever singer is NOT a winner.
Adam's lines were busy the entire four hour voting time so I only got through 40-50 times that night. Last year for David Cook I got through 400-500 times. I spent 4 hours wasting my time. Every phone should have a max amount of votes. It is unfair that someone can generate 1000s of votes when I am limited by busy signals and older technology. My votes were worthless this year.
It doesn't really matter who wins. The only vote that counts is DVD sales. Ask Chris Daughtry. However, from a business and ratings point of view, the producers of AI can't allow a big sponsor to even be rumored to have affected the voting. They need to re-think the system.

I think it is ridiculous that people are hating on people from Arkansas over all this nonsense. I live here and am proud to live here and have my whole life!!! I'm glad this is coming to light. It's not about Adam fans "not getting over it" or Adam himself being able to move on (of course he's going to be a Superstar), or even Adam and Kris fans fighting. It's about the integrity of the entire process on this show. Danny Gokey apparently also lost out, he should have been in the finals but the Arkansas voters were already cheating (and I'm no Danny fan, but fair is fair). The show needs to fix this very flawed process before next season, change the unlimited voting to a limited number per phone number--that would solve it instantly. It's not worth the cheating just so Ryan can cite some humongous number of votes cast. We all know that doesn't equal PEOPLE voting. Kudos to the Adam fan who's an AT&T employee who leaked the truth!
I knew something was wrong everyone I talked to voted for Adam. When both contestants sang the last song Kris couldnt even sing the song.. We need a recount if AI wants to keep the public watching. I have been watching since the beginning and now I wont watch until they fix this. Danny G was a way better singer then Kris. So maybe Kris wouldnt even be runner up if you took out the power vote.
Wow, this article is really factually flawed. "Power text" is not a program. It is a way of sending multiple text messages at one time that can be done on any phone with text messaging capability. It is also a voting strategy well-known among Idol fans and used in many previous seasons. In fact, many fansites/blogs (of both Adam and Kris) have posted instructions on how to "power text" throughout the season. It is naive to think that AT&T would have a "favorite" and would take side on one contestant. It is purely business -- they want to sell more phones/text plans, and they go to these events where there are lots of potential new customers. It is unfortunate that these kinds of nonsense are being published, as they are unfair to Kris. He won. Legitimately. That's it. In no way any of these allegations shows Adam actually won. Adam fans should just move on instead of clinging on to these irrational ideas and allegations. This is not doing Adam or Kris any good.
Power votes should be illegal..Why is it they provided Allen with this technical enhancement but not Lambert. Sounds 2 me like AI offered AT&T loads of money so that Allen would win and protect their shows precious reputation. What "it" Lambert" had won? I love my Adam to death but he's got more better things waiting 4 him. He was offered the lead position in KISS! That's far more awesome and better than winning some stupid crown! KISS is more legendary than AI is!
I think America has a huge scandal ahead. The rumours are not just rumours, Arkansas managed to cheat the system of no "technical advancements."
I am glad to see this article being published - Kudos to the editors and reporters for such voting flaw to be reported - this is what I call a responsible journalism which does not point fingers at anyone but seeks to analyse the situation with substantial backing of factual information. Even though I agree that we have to move on since we cannot reverse the situation, it's good that more people know the truth. People who have spent the time and money to vote for Adam, needs to know the truth! As an international fan, I even tried to vote out of desperation and had thus witnessed that the line being busy for hours. I now feel less depressed after such an article got published - though it will NOT give the crown to Adam, but at least people know the truth that 100 million votes are not the real voice of the masses.
Some people say forget it, some say ignore it, some say it's not our problem, some say it does not matter, some say move on, and some say let's find the truth and do something about it - that was the debate before going to war in WWII. Ignoring a problem means one thing: it will come back to destroy you.
I don't think a recount at this stage will do either Adam lambert or Kris Allen any favours. Adam does not need the American Idol title - he will succeed because of his unique and extraordinary talent. We had a similar situation in South Africa recently where due to a technical hitch the final votes were incorrectly counted, and the wrong person was crowned the winner. South Africa now has TWO idols, and there has been a tremendous backlash from supporters of both contestants, leading to a very unpleasant situation for both of them.
My ATT phone bill is DOUBLE this month because I added unlimited text plans to both phones. Do you think I enjoy paying this when I know Adam never stood a chance because they helped in Arkansas. Seriously I dont even want to pay this. Its not about winning or losing, its about TRICKING me into buying a text plan when the person I voted for never had a chance.
After watching the American Idols finale from South Africa, and such an incredible Idol and voice which Adam Lambert had, I was absolutely shocked that Kris won. He had a nice voice but Adam just had it all. Kris paled in comparison. There had to be some mistake, like in our South African Idols. I hope it shows that Adam IS the eventual winner. From such a fantastic show, with amazing guest artists, it was such a let down in the end. Go Adam.....
American IDOL is fixed, there is no way ADAM should have lost and it is a travesty of justice... and a recount should be mandatory removing all the GROUP TEXT VOTES that where sent in from the special phones given to arkansas fans, this was clearly a ploy and misuse of justice.

I will never watch American Idol again, and I urge everyone to email them and say the same thing. They are cheaters, and they deserve our anger. Of course lots of people would have voted for Kris, but he was obviously the runner -up, not the winner. He is only minimally talented, Adam is OFF THE CHARTS! THERE HAS NEVER BEEN ANYONE AS TALENTED ON AMERICAN IDOL BEFORE. I feel so sorry for him. But this whole thing only reinforces what I think about Arkansas anyway. Cheaters, and bible thumping cheaters are the worst, should apoligize to Adam.
