AceShowbiz - Avicii‘s “Wake Me Up” has officially crossed the remarkable milestone of three billion streams on Spotify, as reported by a Spotify representative on February 9. This significant achievement positions the 2013 EDM/country anthem among only 51 songs that have surpassed the three billion streams threshold.
This latest milestone adds to the impressive list of accolades for the track, which made history in February 2014 as the first song ever to reach 200 million streams on Spotify. Furthermore, when “Wake Me Up” hit the two billion streams mark in 2023, it made Avicii the first Swedish artist to achieve this feat on the platform.
As a defining piece of the EDM genre, “Wake Me Up” became a cultural phenomenon, peaking at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in October 2013 and maintaining a presence on the chart for an impressive 54 weeks. The song, featuring the soulful vocals of Aloe Blacc, dominated the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart for 26 weeks and notably spent 55 weeks overall on that chart.
Initially, the song faced a lukewarm reception from dance music enthusiasts, with its debut at the Ultra Music Festival in 2013 becoming a legendary story in EDM history; it was famously booed by the crowd. This performance featured appearances from both Blacc and country artist Audra Mae and preceded the release of Avicii’s country-influenced album, True, which also included the hit “Hey Brother,” showcasing the talents of bluegrass icon Dan Tyminski.
Other notable tracks that have surpassed three billion streams on Spotify include The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights,” Ed Sheeran’s “The Shape of You,” “Sweater Weather” by The Neighbourhood, Daft Punk and The Weeknd’s “Starboy,” and “As It Was” by Harry Styles.
