AceShowbiz - Mariah Carey has secured another legal win concerning her iconic holiday song, "All I Want for Christmas Is You." On Tuesday, March 18, a Los Angeles federal judge granted her request for summary judgment and dismissed the lawsuit entirely.
The ruling put an end to the claims made by songwriter Troy Powers and country musician Andy Stone, who performs as Vince Vance with the band Vince Vance and the Valiants.
The lawsuit, initially filed in November, alleged that Carey's 1994 hit wrongfully infringed on their 1989 song of the same title. The plaintiffs sought a whopping $20 million in damages from Carey, Sony Music Entertainment, and Universal Music Group.
This was not Stone's first attempt; a previous lawsuit also sought $20 million but he dismissed the case without prejudice, which means it could be refiled. He later teamed up with Powers in a second suit.
Judge Mónica Ramírez Almadani of the U.S. District Court, Central District of California, ruled that the plaintiffs were unable to provide "sufficient objective similarities" between their song and Carey's.
Almadani concurred with the defense's argument that Carey's version incorporated tropes and elements common in Christmas music long before the 1989 song existed.
"Our client retained two of the most accomplished experts teaching music at two of the United States top universities and did not file until in a blind process both opined that there was infringement," noted Gerald Fox, the attorney representing the plaintiffs, in a statement provided to USA Today.
Despite this, the district court still chose to dismiss the case. Fox expressed their disappointment by stating, "Sadly, it appears that the district courts routinely dismiss most plaintiff's copyright cases." He also hinted that they are considering re-filing the case.
Neither Mariah Carey nor the named corporate entities, Sony and UMG, have released any statements regarding the recent ruling.
Mariah's "All I Want for Christmas Is You" was written in collaboration with Walter Afanasieff and featured on her 1994 holiday album "Merry Christmas." The song remains a beloved seasonal staple and continues to dominate holiday charts year after year.
As young music enthusiasts celebrate the festive season with Carey's enduring hit, this ruling ensures that "All I Want for Christmas Is You" remains an undisputed Christmas classic, legally and musically.
