Stone was killed in a tragic car accident on the early morning of Saturday, February 29, in Mobile, Alabama, following a performance. WSFA, a Montgomery, Alabama, television station, reported that the wreck involved a commercial vehicle and occurred around 7 A.M.
Stone was coming from a show with her band members and background singers when her Sprinter van turned over. She was tragically the only casualty in the incident.
Born Angela Brown, Stone was a founding member of The Sequence, a pioneering female rap group from Columbia, South Carolina. The trio's 1980 hit "Funk You Up" would later be sampled in Bruno Mars' "Uptown Funk" and Dr. Dre's "Keep Their Heads Ringin'."
After six years with The Sequence, Stone launched a successful solo career in the late 1990s, debuting her gold-certified album "Black Diamond" in 1999. Her 2001 album "Mahogany Soul" included several hits, including "Brotha," "No More Rain," and "Wish I Didn't Miss You," which hit number one on Billboard's Dance Club Songs.
Stone received her first Grammy nomination in 2003 and subsequent nominations in 2004 and 2008, solidifying her place in the annals of R&B history.
Stone also made notable contributions as a songwriter, with her and The Sequence being inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2024. Her career extended beyond music, with appearances on VH1's "Celebrity Fit Club" and "R&B Divas: Atlanta", along with film roles in "The Hot Chick", "The Fighting Temptations", and "Ride Along".
In her final social media post on January 13, Stone reflected on her prolific career, writing, "I've been in the game for 50 years. My first solo album is 25 years old. I've put in a lot of work over the years. God gave me this gift, and I have shared it with the world. Even at this point, I am asking my creator what is next because I have so much more to give."
Stone is survived by her son Michael Archer, daughter Diamond Stone, and two grandchildren. Her daughter Diamond, confirmed the news of her passing with an emotional Facebook post, stating, "My mommy is gone [sobbing emojis]."
