AceShowbiz - Karla Sofia Gascon denies disparaging her "Emilia Perez" co-star Selena Gomez on Twitter/X. The first-time Oscar nominee claims that a recently rediscovered tweet in which she seemingly referred to the "Only Murders in the Building" actress as a "rich rat" was entirely fabricated.
Despite the screenshot making its round online, Gascón asserted during a teary interview with CNN en Español, "Of course that's not mine. I've never said anything about my partner. I would never refer to her that way."
She also responded to calls for the Academy to rescind her nomination. "I cannot renounce a nomination because what I have done is a job and what is being valued is my acting work," she said, dismissing calls for her to step down. "I have not committed any crime nor have I harmed anyone, I am not a racist, nor am I anything that all these people have taken it upon themselves to try to make others believe that I am."
Prior to the interview, Gascón had posted a lengthy statement on Instagram, alleging that her words had been manipulated or taken out of context. She denied being racist or supporting any of the beliefs attributed to her in the tweet.
She accused haters of smear campaign. "They have already won, they have achieved their objective, to stain my existence with lies or things taken out of context," she wrote. "Anyone who knows me knows that I am not a racist nor any of the things for which I have been judged and condemned without trial and without an option to explain my true intention..."
