Steven Bauer, born Esteban Ernesto Echevarría Samson on December 2, 1956, is an American actor who has carved a distinctive path through Hollywood by often portraying intense, morally complex characters of Cuban heritage. He is best known for his breakout role as the loyal and tragic Manny Ribera in the 1983 crime epic Scarface, a performance that established him as a memorable figure in gangster cinema. Bauer’s career has spanned decades, marked by a notable return to prominence in the golden age of television, where he brought a quiet menace to roles in critically acclaimed series.

Bauer’s journey into acting began in his youth in Miami, Florida, where he was raised by his Cuban mother and stepfather. He attended Miami Dade College before transferring to the University of Miami, where he studied drama. His first major role came on the PBS series ¿Qué Pasa, USA?, which ran from 1977 to 1979. On the show, he played Joe Peña, a Cuban-American teenager navigating the cultural tensions between his family’s heritage and his American life, a role that resonated deeply with the bilingual community and gave Bauer his initial exposure. This experience led him to Hollywood, where he adopted the stage name Steven Bauer.

His big break arrived when he was cast as Manny Ribera, the best friend and right-hand man to Al Pacino’s Tony Montana in Brian De Palma’s Scarface. Bauer’s portrayal of Manny was both charismatic and vulnerable, and his chemistry with Pacino helped define the film’s tragic arc. Though the movie was initially met with mixed reviews, it has since become a cult classic, and Bauer’s performance remains one of its most beloved elements. Following Scarface, he appeared in a variety of films, including Thief of Hearts and Gleaming the Cube, and took on television roles in series like Wiseguy.

After a period of quieter work, Bauer experienced a significant career resurgence in the 2010s, largely due to his role as the ruthless drug lord Don Eladio Vuente in the acclaimed series Breaking Bad. He appeared in the episode "Salud" in 2011, and his chilling performance made such an impact that he reprised the role in the prequel series Better Call Saul from 2017 to 2022. Simultaneously, Bauer found another defining television role as Avi Rudin, a retired Mossad agent, on the Showtime drama Ray Donovan from 2013 to 2017. His work on these series demonstrated his ability to bring gravitas and authenticity to supporting roles, earning him a new generation of fans. Bauer continues to act steadily, appearing in independent films and guest spots on television, solidifying his status as a versatile and enduring character actor.
