AceShowbiz - Matt Rife's meteoric rise in the comedy world continues to captivate audiences, and his recent appearance on "The View" is no exception. The 29-year-old comedian, known for his risqué humor, visited the daytime talk show on December 3 to promote his new book, "Your Mom's Gonna Love Me." It was during this appearance that Rife made a quip that left EGOT winner Whoopi Goldberg briefly speechless.
After Goldberg praised the book, calling it "wonderful" and inquiring if Rife had recorded the audiobook, the comedian responded, "You did the audiobook? A little lazy, but I respect it." The unexpected remark drew laughter from the studio audience and Goldberg's co-hosts, including Sunny Hostin, former "The Bachelorette" Rachel Lindsay, and "View" alum Abby Huntsman.
Although Goldberg was momentarily at a loss for words, she quickly recovered and continued her praise for Rife, stating, "Your work is wonderful and it's great to watch because, you know, people do feel like they can come up and say anything to you or spit at you or take a swing."
This appearance comes amid what seems to be a resurgence for Rife, especially following the controversy surrounding his debut Netflix special "Natural Selection" last year. The special featured a contentious joke about domestic violence, intended, as Rife explained, to test if the crowd would be "fun or not." The backlash included a fake apology post on Instagram, which only added fuel to the fire.
During the segment, Hostin highlighted the difficulties comedians face today. "You kind of say it all," she noted, adding that Goldberg often remarks that "comedians are under attack now." Rife concurred, citing his friend and comic Nate Bargatze as an example of a comedian who faces less scrutiny due to his less raunchy jokes.
"That's where you'd have to, I guess, just decide how much you want to be yourself and how much you want to pander to a community that might not even care about you in the first place," Rife observed. Goldberg agreed, emphasizing that "comics are always under fire."
Rife's revelations in "Your Mom's Gonna Love Me" have also been making waves. He addresses rumors about his appearance, attributing his "bizarrely stunted journey through puberty" to "a million-and-one internet conspiracies" regarding possible plastic surgery. From looking like "a 13-year-old" to an "actual grown-ish man" in a short time, Rife's transformation is just one aspect of his intriguing story.
Looking ahead, Rife is set to embark on The Stay Golden Tour in 2025, with an extensive schedule of North American shows. The tour, starting on March 8 in Dallas and concluding in Boston on December 31, promises even "bigger and better shows," including a special taping planned for his September performances in Austin, Texas.
