AceShowbiz - Mary Fitzgerald, 44, has never been one to shy away from sharing her life's ups and downs. In her new memoir, "Selling Sunshine: Surviving Teenage Motherhood, Thriving in Luxury Real Estate, and Finally Finding My Voice," she delves into deeply personal experiences, offering readers a raw look at her resilience and determination.
One of the most harrowing experiences that Mary recounts is a sexual assault that occurred a decade ago. Invited by a man she calls Joe to his apartment in Los Angeles, she accepted a drink that led to her losing consciousness. She woke up to find herself being assaulted.
"When I woke up, I was on Joe's bed, with my arms pinned against his mattress, and my pants around my ankles," she wrote. The traumatic event still affects her. "I still am affected by it. It's something that will probably never 100 percent go away," Mary admitted. Her husband, Romain Bonnet, has been a source of unwavering support.
Beyond recounting her assault, Mary speaks candidly about becoming pregnant at 15 and the subsequent judgement she faced in her Indiana town. "Every place I went, I was a baby with a baby, and I was judged. It was really hurtful [but] because of that, I'm able to deal with the criticism we get on the show," she explained. This challenging experience hardened her against external judgments, paving the way for her success in the highly scrutinized real estate industry.
The "Selling Sunset" star also shares the emotional roller-coaster of her recent fertility struggles, including a miscarriage and several rounds of IVF. "I want the bad that happened to me to help other people," she told Us Weekly. In addition, she has joined the board of directors for AAGL, a women's health organization, using her platform to advocate for those struggling with fertility issues.
The core message of Mary's memoir is one of hope and resilience. "There is a light at the end of the tunnel," she emphasized. Her story encourages readers to keep moving forward despite life's challenges. "Whatever it is that you're going through, you'll get through it, just like everything else in your life. Just keep believing in yourself because I never believed that I would be where I am now either," she said.
Mary's memoir, "Selling Sunshine: Surviving Teenage Motherhood, Thriving in Luxury Real Estate, and Finally Finding My Voice," will be available on September 24. Her story stands as a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of supporting one another through difficult times.
