AceShowbiz - Lady Gaga has candidly shared that she is "finally pain-free" after years of battling fibromyalgia. In her October 2024 cover story for Vogue, the 38-year-old revealed that her 2022 Chromatica Ball tour marked the first time she performed without experiencing pain.
"It was the first time I've performed not in pain in…I don't even remember," Gaga said.
The Mayo Clinic defines fibromyalgia as a condition characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep disturbances, memory issues, and mood swings. The condition amplifies painful sensations by affecting the brain's and spinal cord's processing of pain signals.
Gaga's struggle with fibromyalgia became public knowledge during her 2017 Netflix documentary, "Gaga: Five Foot Two", where she detailed her reliance on marijuana to manage her pain. The artist highlighted how her condition forced her to cancel several tour dates, including a performance in Brazil due to severe pain that led to hospitalization.
"I get so irritated with people who don't believe fibromyalgia is real," she said in a September 2018 interview with Vogue. "People need to be more compassionate. Chronic pain is no joke. And it's every day waking up not knowing how you're going to feel."
The onset of her fibromyalgia can be traced back to 2013 when she fractured her hip, necessitating surgery and the cancellation of several tour dates. Her condition worsened over the years, culminating in the cancellation of the last ten shows of her 2018 Joanne World Tour.
The turning point came with her 2022 Chromatica Ball tour, where she performed pain-free. Gaga credits her fiancé, Michael Polansky, for playing a significant role in her journey to overcoming chronic pain. "Michael and I did that tour together. I did it pain-free! I haven't smoked pot in years. I've, like, changed," she shared with Vogue.
"I feel like this new album, in a lot of ways, is about that time but from a place of happiness instead of misery. And now, Michael and I are really excited to organize our lives - and our marriage - around our creative output as a couple."
Gaga's upcoming seventh studio album promises to reflect her journey from pain to triumph. Her renewed sense of well-being and her relationship with Polansky are pivotal as she prepares to release new music. The shift from managing chronic pain to embracing a more balanced life has infused her with a fresh perspective, eager to share with her fans.
"For a long time, for most of my career," Gaga told Vogue, "My life was controlled by this business: what people wanted from me; what they hoped I could achieve; how to keep me going. And that can be a lot of pressure and it's scary. But I feel like I'm finally coming out on the other side."
With her personal and professional growth evident, Lady Gaga's transformative process marks a new chapter in her storied career, offering a glimpse into her journey from pain to triumph.
