Adrian Peterson
- Attended Palestine High School, Texas
Adrian Peterson, born Adrian Lewis Peterson on March 21, 1985, in Palestine, Texas, is an American former professional football player widely regarded as one of the greatest running backs in the history of the National Football League. His career, spanning 15 seasons, was defined by a rare combination of explosive power, breakaway speed, and a relentless determination that saw him overcome significant adversity to achieve legendary status. He is best known for his record-setting rookie year and a remarkable 2012 comeback season that earned him the league's Most Valuable Player award.
Growing up in Texas, athletic excellence was a family tradition, with his father, Nelson Peterson, having played college basketball. Peterson attended the University of Oklahoma, where he immediately became a national sensation. As a freshman in 2004, he rushed for 1,925 yards, set a new NCAA freshman rushing record, was named a unanimous All-American, and finished as the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy, the highest finish ever for a first-year player. He left college as Oklahoma's third-all-time leading rusher and was selected seventh overall by the Minnesota Vikings in the 2007 NFL Draft.
Peterson's impact on the NFL was instantaneous. In his rookie season, he set a single-game rushing record with 296 yards against the San Diego Chargers, a performance that cemented his stardom and earned him the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award. He continued to shatter milestones, becoming the fifth-fastest player to reach 5,000 career rushing yards. His career faced a major hurdle in 2011 when he suffered a devastating tear of both his anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments. Defying all medical expectations, Peterson returned for the 2012 season opener and proceeded to have one of the greatest seasons by a running back ever, rushing for 2,097 yards—just nine yards short of Eric Dickerson's single-season record—and winning the NFL MVP award, the last non-quarterback to do so.
The latter stages of his career were marked by both professional challenges and personal controversy. In 2014, he was indicted on charges of reckless or negligent injury to a child and suspended for the majority of the season. After a decade with the Vikings, Peterson played for several teams including the New Orleans Saints, Arizona Cardinals, Washington Redskins, Detroit Lions, Tennessee Titans, and Seattle Seahawks, demonstrating his longevity in a demanding position. He retired having solidified his place in football history, ranking among the top five rushers of all time and leaving a legacy defined by breathtaking athletic feats and an indomitable will to compete.
