The director discusses her recognition at Locarno Film Festival, the changing landscape for female directors, and her ongoing relationship with her own filmography.

AceShowbiz - At the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, filmmaker Jane Campion was honored with the prestigious Palme d'Onore Manor Award. Reflecting on the industry's progress since then, she acknowledged the groundbreaking success of "Barbie", directed by Greta Gerwig.

"It's fantastic," Campion said. "We finally have a film not about Marvel characters but a humorous and creative take on the Barbie story. And it's made by a woman who's made a historical bundle out of it."

Campion's comments resonated with her own struggle as a female director. In 2017, a photo of past Palme d'Or winners showed her as the only woman among a sea of men, despite being the winner 24 years earlier for "The Piano".

"It was a shock," she recalled. "It made you realize that women weren't making films. But now it's changed. We have Julie Ducournau and Justine Triet winning Palme d'Or's. I feel like an auntie to them."

Campion's sentiments reflect a broader shift in the industry. "The Berlin Wall of gender dominance is down," she said. "We've seen great women winning awards like Chloe Zhao and Justine Triet."

Despite her accomplishments, Campion describes her relationship with her films as "very troubled." She finds the process of bringing them to fruition so intense that it's hard for her to look back on them critically.

"I'm like a mother animal," she said. "I want to push them out and never see them again. But the period of nurturing them is full of love and intensity."

Following the success of "Power of the Dog", Campion had planned to retire but now says she may have another film in her. "I think I'm very lucky," she said. "People in the industry believe there will be another good film. And I certainly will be trying."
