AceShowbiz - Jordan Chiles has spoken out after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled to strip the U.S. gymnast of her Olympic bronze medal. The decision has fueled significant controversy, especially after Chiles' heartfelt statement shared publicly.
On Thursday, August 15, Chiles addressed her fans and supporters in a statement shared on social media, expressing her devastation over the ruling and her appreciation for the unwavering support she had received.
"I am overwhelmed by the love I have received over the past few days. I am also incredibly grateful to my family, teammates, coaches, fans, USAG, and the USOPC for their unwavering support during this difficult time," Chiles wrote.
Chiles was initially awarded the bronze medal in the women's floor exercise during the Paris 2024 Olympics, having impressively climbed from fifth place after her coaches appealed her score based on the difficulty level of her routine. However, the Romanian National Olympic Committee filed a protest, stating that the appeal by Chiles' coaches was submitted four seconds after the permitted one-minute window.
The CAS upheld Romania's protest, which led to Chiles' scoring being reverted, thus awarding the bronze medal to Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu, who initially finished fourth.
Chiles expressed her frustration, writing, "I heard the devastating news that my bronze medal had been stripped away. I had confidence in the appeal brought by USAG, who gave conclusive evidence that my score followed all the rules. This appeal was unsuccessful."
Compounding her distress, Chiles also faced racially driven attacks on social media, which added to the emotional toll. "The unprompted racially driven attacks on social media are wrong and extremely hurtful. I've poured my heart and soul into this sport and I am so proud to represent my culture and my country," she shared.
Chiles, a member of the gold medal-winning team alongside Simone Biles, Hezley Rivera, Jade Carey, and Sunisa Lee, has vowed to keep fighting for justice while adhering to her principles. She wrote, "I will never waver from my values of competing with integrity, striving for excellence, upholding the values of sportsmanship and the rules that dictate fairness."
Amidst the turmoil, Chiles decided to take a break from social media to regroup. Her teammates and the broader gymnastics community have rallied in her support. Suni Lee voiced her solidarity by criticizing the decision's execution and affirming that Chiles will always be an Olympic champion in her eyes.
The legal debacle over such precise timing leaves room for a prolonged battle over the final results. "I will approach this challenge as I have others - and will make every effort to ensure that justice is done. I believe that at the end of this journey, the people in control will do the right thing," Chiles concluded.
