AceShowbiz - USA Gymnastics announced on social media on Monday, August 12 that the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) denied Jordan Chiles' appeal to reinstate her bronze medal from the women's individual floor exercise final held on August 5. They stated, "USA Gymnastics was notified by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Monday that their rules do not allow for an arbitral award to be reconsidered even when conclusive new evidence is presented."
Chiles initially placed fifth in the competition with a score of 13.666, behind Romanian gymnasts Ana Barbosu and Sabrina Maneca-Voinea, who were tied with 13.700. After her coaches argued that her difficulty rating should be higher, judges awarded Chiles additional credit, pushing her score to 13.766 and placing her in the bronze medal position. Her achievement resulted in the first all-black podium in gymnastics history.
However, controversy soon followed. The CAS ruled on August 10 that Chiles' coach Cecile Landi had submitted the challenge of her initial score four seconds late, following an appeal by the Romanian Gymnastics Federation. This decision led to Chiles being stripped of her medal, with the bronze being re-awarded to Barbosu.
USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) attempted to overturn this ruling, arguing that video evidence proved Landi submitted the appeal within the required time window. The video, showing a time-stamp indicating the challenge was submitted 47 seconds after the score was posted, was not available during the initial CAS ruling.
Despite this, the CAS refused to reconsider their decision, citing their rules against re-evaluating arbitral awards, regardless of new evidence. USA Gymnastics expressed their determination to continue pursuing justice for Chiles, even considering taking the matter to the Swiss Federal Tribunal.
Chiles' case reflects broader issues athletes face in competitive sports. Amidst the controversy, Chiles has returned to the United States, where she has been part of various media engagements, including appearances on the "Today" show and a conversation with Elmo. Unfortunately, she has also been subject to racist attacks, prompting her to take a break from social media for her mental health.
