The creator of HBO's 'Girls' has decided to step away from the adaptation of Mattel's doll 'Polly Pocket', choosing instead to focus on projects that resonate more deeply with her personal vision.

AceShowbiz - Lena Dunham, 38, announced in an interview with The New Yorker that she is no longer attached to the "Polly Pocket" movie, a project she had been working on for three years. The film, initially announced in 2021, was planned as one of Mattel's follow-up projects after the blockbuster success of "Barbie," directed by Greta Gerwig.

"I'm not going to make the Polly Pocket movie," Dunham revealed. Despite her extensive work on the script, Dunham felt an internal conflict about whether she could imbue the film with the same unique flavor that Gerwig brought to "Barbie."

"I think Greta managed this incredible feat [with 'Barbie'], which was to make this thing that was literally candy to so many different kinds of people and was perfectly and divinely Greta," said Dunham. "And I just - I felt like, unless I can do it that way, I'm not going to do it. I don't think I have that in me."

Instead, Dunham decided to follow the advice of her mentor, Nora Ephron, who urged her to "Go be weird. Don't kowtow to anyone." This shift in focus led her to two new projects with Netflix.

The first is a series titled "Too Much," an autobiographical rom-com starring Megan Stalter as a New York woman who moves to London after a breakup and meets a musician, played by "The White Lotus" star Will Sharpe. Dunham has a smaller role in this series, partially to avoid the kind of backlash she faced regarding her body during her time on "Girls."

Dunham's second Netflix project is a spy series about a group of college students being recruited by government agencies like the CIA. "Physically, I was just not up for having my body dissected again," Dunham mentioned, reflecting on her decision to stay behind the camera more often now.

Mattel has affirmed that the "Polly Pocket" movie is still in development, even without Dunham's involvement. "Lena is a remarkable writer and creator, and we wish her all the best!" a Mattel spokesperson stated.

Though stepping back from "Polly Pocket" was not an easy choice for Dunham, it was one she felt necessary to preserve her well-being and creative integrity. "I used to think that winning meant you just keep doing it and you don't care what anybody thinks," she said. "I forgot that winning is actually just protecting yourself and doing what you need to do to keep making work."

While fans may be disappointed that Dunham won't be bringing the tiny toy to the big screen, they can look forward to her upcoming Netflix projects that promise to be just as innovative and compelling.
