Ricky Martin Opens Up About Impact on Music and LGBTQ+ Representation

At CAA's Amplify summit, the legendary singer/actor shares insights on his career milestones, LGBTQ+ visibility, and the transformative experiences on 'Palm Royale'.

AceShowbiz - During CAA's Amplify summit, Ricky Martin reflected on his illustrious career in music and his impact on LGBTQ+ representation. In "Palm Royale", Martin portrays Robert, a gay bartender navigating life in the 1960s. He emphasized the importance of providing opportunities for LGBTQ+ actors to portray a diverse range of characters.

Martin's success at the 1999 Grammys with "La Copa De La Vida" opened doors for him in the American mainstream. He expressed gratitude for his father's support in coming out as gay in 2010 and sharing his story in his memoir, "Me".

"A couple of years ago when I was promoting '[The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story'], this journalist from Poland asked me 'Ricky, aren't you afraid that you're going to be typecast as a gay man in every role that they give you?' and I wondered if he would ask the same thing to Brad Pitt; 'Brad Pitt, are you afraid that you are being typecast as a straight man all the time from now on?' " he said. "Men and women out there in the LGBT communities are dying to tell stories. Just give them the opportunity. They will rock your script -- doesn't matter if they're portraying gay, straight, transgender. It doesn't matter."

In separate interview, the singer also shared an adorable anecdote about his twin sons, Matteo and Valentino. When they were younger, they were unaware of their father's fame until attending a concert. Now, at 15, they offer frank critiques of his performances, which Martin values.

Martin emphasized the importance of honesty and authenticity in his relationships with his family. He became a father to Matteo and Valentino via surrogacy in 2008 and welcomed daughter Lucia and son Renn with husband Jwan Yosef in 2017 and 2018.

"Men and women out there in the LGBT communities are dying to tell stories," Martin stated. "Just give them the opportunity." Through his advocacy and artistry, Martin continues to champion LGBTQ+ visibility and foster a more inclusive entertainment landscape.
