AceShowbiz - Having been an outspoken critic of Donald Trump, Robert De Niro is celebrating the former president's guilty verdict in the Stormy Daniels hush money case. After the verdict was delivered on Thursday, May 30, the actor shared his feelings about the outcome of the trial on the red carpet of his new movie "Ezra".
"I'm always very weary. I don't wanna get too excited about anything," the 81-year-old told Page Six at the screening in New York City. "It's as it should be. Justice has been served. That's it."
The "Killers of the Flower Moon" star doubled down on why people should still be cautious about the 2024 presidential election, noting, "For me, it's not over 'til it's over." Though so, he believes that the guilty verdict would affect the presidential election.
Speaking to Variety at the same event, De Niro elaborated more on his thought on the verdict. "I think justice was served," he said, "This is just one part of the whole picture, so I want to be very careful."
Still, he's "upset" that it took this long to bring Trump to justice. "This never should have gotten to this stage," he continued, "I don't want to be talking, but I am so upset by it. I have to say something. This is my country. This guy wants to destroy it. Period. He's crazy."
Asked if he ever fears for his safety, De Niro responded, "You think about that. It makes me more angry, but I have to be afraid to be intimidated. And that's why I said, you're not going to intimidate us."
The acting vet further claimed that most people in this country have agreed with him. "People are fed up, they're going to fight back. That's not what we're about in this country," he said.
De Niro has long spoken up against Trump. Recently, he spoke at a Democrat news conference outside the Manhattan courtroom where Trump's trial took place, calling for the former president to be sent to jail.
"The fact is whether he's acquitted, whether it's hung jury, whatever it is, he is guilty, and we all know it," he said earlier this week. "I've never seen a guy get out of so many things and we all know this. Everybody in the world knows this."
On Thursday, Trump was found guilty of all 34 felony counts. He was accused of conspiring to cover up a 2006 sexual encounter with Daniels by paying her $130,000 and later falsifying records to claim it as a legal expense. He faces up to four years in prison and has now become the first former president convicted of a crime.
