Sam Waterston Departs 'Law and Order', Tony Goldwyn Joins Cast as New D.A.

The 83-year-old actor first joined 'Law and Order' in its fifth season in 1994, serving as the executive assistant district attorney for most of his tenure before becoming the assistant district attorney after season 17.

AceShowbiz - Sam Waterston is leaving "Law & Order" after being on the show for more than 400 episodes. While the District Attorney Jack McCoy depicter is stepping away, Tony Goldwyn is joining the cast as a new D.A.

The news was announced by NBC on Friday, February 2. While it's unclear when the "Scandal" alum will appear on the series, it's unveiled that the 83-year-old star's final episode will air on February 22.

Sam first joined "Law & Order" in its fifth season in 1994. He served as the executive assistant district attorney for most of his tenure before becoming the assistant district attorney after season 17 and finally a D.A. in season 20.

During his tenure as D.A. Jack McCoy, Sam won a SAG Award. He was also acknowledged with multiple Emmy and Golden Globe Award nominations.

As for Tom, he will be joining Law & Order as an as-yet-unnamed District Attorney alongside series regulars Hugh Dancy, Camryn Manheim, Odelya Halevi, Mehcad Brooks as well as Reid Scott. He is best known for playing President Fitzgerald Grant on "Scandal" opposite Kerry Washington from 2012 to 2018.

Tom made his breakout role in 1990's "Ghost" as the scheming swindling friends of Patrick Swayze's Sam Wheat and his wife Molly, played by Demi Moore. He also appeared in the 2018 Broadway production of Network starring Bryan Cranston.
