The 'Thor: Ragnarok' director is expected to begin shooting the film adaptation of 'Next Goal Wins' in the autumn with 'The Inbetweeners' co-creator Iain Morris sharing screenwriting duty with him.

AceShowbiz - Taika Waititi will direct a movie adaptation of soccer documentary "Next Goal Wins" before he takes on "Thor: Love and Thunder".

The "Thor: Ragnarok" filmmaker is gearing up to premiere his Second World War satire "Jojo Rabbit" at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September and is slated to begin filming the Marvel follow-up in Australia in March 2020.

However, editors at The Hollywood Reporter have confirmed he has taken on another project which will fit in between the two, as he will begin shooting the underdog sports movie in the autumn.

The film is an adaptation of "Next Goal Wins", a 2014 documentary following Dutch-American coach Thomas Rongen's attempts to turn the American Samoa soccer team from perennial losers into winners.

British actor and filmmaker Andy Serkis and his producing partner Jonathan Cavendish optioned the rights to the documentary in 2015 and brought it to the New Zealand-born director, who has now got on board alongside producer Garrett Basch. "The Inbetweeners" co-creator Iain Morris will share screenwriting duties with Waititi.

It's believed the filmmaker was freed up to direct the project due to the delay to his Japanese manga blockbuster "Akira" - which has been placed on hold due to potential clashes with the "Thor: Love and Thunder" shooting schedule.

The cast for "Next Goal Wins" is yet to be announced.
