The Canadian singer received strong criticism for saying she would've voted for Trump 'even though he was offensive,' because 'he seemed honest.'

AceShowbiz - Shania Twain received a strong backlash after weighing on the 2016 presidential election. While she's not an American and thus could not cast a vote, the Canadian singer shared her thoughts on the elected President Donald Trump in an interview The Guardian published on Sunday, April 22.

"I would have voted for him because, even though he was offensive, he seemed honest," said the country pop star. "Do you want straight or polite?" she argued. "Not that you shouldn't be able to have both. If I were voting, I just don't want bullsh**t. I would have voted for a feeling that it was transparent. And politics has a reputation of not being that, right?"

Soon after the interview was published, people took to Twitter to slam Shania for her offensive comments. "Ummm, sorry, but being an offensive loudmouth doesn't make you honest. It just makes you an a**hole," one wrote. Another added, "I am disappointed in Shania Twain's feeling on Trump and when I get the time I am going to go into my attic and look for one of her cassettes to throw out in protest."

Following the backlash, Shania has taken to her own Twitter page to apologize for her controversial comments on Trump. She said in a lengthy statement, "I would like to apologise to anybody I have offended in a recent interview with the Guardian relating to the American President. The question caught me off guard. As a Canadian, I regret answering this unexpected question without giving my response more context."

She continued, "I am passionately against discrimination of any kind and hope it's clear from the choices I have made, and the people I stand with, that I do not hold any common moral beliefs with the current President."

The 52-year-old songstress explained, "I was trying to explain, in response to a question about the election, that my limited understanding was that the President talked to a portion of America like an accessible person they could relate to, as he was NOT a politician."

"My answer was awkward, but certainly should not be taken as representative of my values nor does it mean I endorse him. I make music to bring people together. My path will always be one of inclusivity, as my history shows," she concluded.

During the interview, Shania also claimed that her stepfather abused her sexually, physically and psychologically, starting when she was about 10. "Around the age of 10. I feel the sexual abuse goes hand in hand with the physical and psychological abuse when it's somebody you know," she shared. "I learned to block it out. Abusers need to manipulate you, whether it's before or after, and what I said to myself is: 'OK, there's something wrong with this person and that person is not well.' "

Of her relationship with her husband Frederic Thiebaud, whom she married in 2011 after her former best friend and Frederic's then-wife Marie-Anne Thiebaud split up her marriage to producer Mutt Lange, she gushed, "Yes, it's a passionate love on every level. I used to be very monotone in my relationships."

Shania also admitted that she still has bad blood with Marie-Anne. "There was one song I wrote about my cheating friend and there was a lot of (f-words) in there. I hated her, so that's the best word to use when you hate somebody," she revealed. "I do really nasty things in my dreams to her. I'm always cutting her hair or shaving it off."
