Through her Instagram account, the 'Hero' hitmaker says she feels 'uplifted' by 'overwhelming support' from fans following the revelation about her diagnosis.

AceShowbiz - Mariah Carey has been "uplifted" by support from fans following her confession she has been battling bipolar disorder. The "Hero" singer went public with her diagnosis earlier this week (ends April 15), and told People magazine she was in denial after first being diagnosed with the condition in 2001, when she was hospitalised for a physical and mental breakdown.

"I was so terrified of losing everything, I convinced myself the only way to deal with this was to not deal with this," Mariah explained. "Until recently I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose me. It was too heavy a burden to carry and I simply couldn't do that anymore."

After messages of support flooded in from fans on social media, she took to Instagram to thank her 6.6 million followers for their warm wishes. "I've been hard at work, feeling inspired by each of your stories and uplifted by your overwhelming support," she posted on Saturday, alongside a picture of herself at a photoshoot. "Let's continue to encourage each other on our journeys."

Mariah, mother to six-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe with her ex-husband Nick Cannon, revealed she had sought treatment for the condition, and is now back to writing songs and making music. "I'm actually taking medication that seems to be pretty good. It's not making me feel too tired or sluggish or anything like that. Finding the proper balance is what is most important," she explained in the interview on Wednesday.

Mariah also admitted she initially thought she had a sleeping disorder before being diagnosed as bipolar. "It turns out that I was experiencing a form of mania. Eventually I would just hit a wall," she revealed. "I guess my depressive episodes were characterised by having very low energy. I would feel so lonely and sad - even guilty that I wasn't doing what I needed to be doing for my career."
