According to a new biography, one night at Balmoral, Prince Charles confronted his mother to accept Camilla in the family but the Queen's response surprised him.

AceShowbiz - While it's not a secret that Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles' wife Camilla Parker-Bowles' relationship may not be the best, a new book reveals that things between the two British royal family members were serious. Written by Tom Bower, "Rebel Prince: The Power, Passion and Defiance of Prince Charles" suggests that there was a cold war between them due to Prince Charles' affair with Camilla during his marriage to Princess Diana.

According to the new biography, which excerpt was published by Daily Mail, back in the summer of 1998, Camilla allegedly couldn't take it anymore with the fact that she must keep her relationship with the Prince a low profile. "You're off to the theatre with friends, so why can't I come?" she allegedly snapped.

That prompted Prince Charles to confront his mother to accept Camilla in the family. Charles hoped that the Queen would allow him to live openly with Camilla. But much to his surprise, Her Majesty, who apparently had "several martinis" at her Balmoral sitting room, replied forcefully to her son's request.

"She would not condone his adultery, nor forgive Camilla for not leaving Charles alone to allow his marriage to recover," Bower said in the biography. In addition, the Queen reportedly called Camilla "that wicked woman," adding, "I want nothing to do with her." Charles later fled the room before tearfully informing Camilla about what happened.

Despite his mother's disapproval, Charles got support from his mother's sister, Princes Margaret. Princess Margaret, who died in 2002, was said to sympathize with him and tried to intercede on his behalf, but to no avail.

Charles reportedly felt that the entire House of Windsor was against him. It was also said that he believed that his bother Andrew was orchestrating a plan for his downfall by spreading poison about Camilla to the Queen and Prince Philip. "Andrew wanted to be me," Charles allegedly told his assistant private secretary, Mark Bolland, who acted as his spin doctor. "I should have let him work with me. Now he's unhelpful."

But after much opposition, Prince Charles and Camilla got married in 2005. But it didn't mean that Her Majesty had fully welcomed the latter as the Queen didn't invite Camilla to ceremonies or official dinners in the run-up. Bower also added that "there was very little special Welsh gold left to make Camilla's wedding ring."
